Frontside knocking.

Hi all,

 

I have a knocking coming from the front offside (STILL!) and a mechanic has had a look and is unable to spot anything loose.

 

I was reading "I don't creak anymore :) :) and was wondering if this could be the same problem as mine?

 

THe only thing is, my supe doesnt creak, it knocks whenver I go over a bump, but I do have the steering problem that is mentioned, where it feels a bit unsteady and front end wobbly over bumps.

 

I suppose theres no harm in me getting underneath and having a look, the only thing is I don't have a torque wrench, can I just tighten her up by hand?

Mike, as Paul says, you can just use a big bar for the big bolts - don't go mad on the small ones though.... The settings I think are on the link to the US site.

 

The problem you may have is the deep socket needed to get into the nuts that were loose on mine.

 

If you want to borrow a torque wrench I can drop mine in with Jacquie on Monday.

 

It was the creaking that got my attention, the road noise and knocking over bumps I just put down to the way the car is.

Thanks for that, Jax has mentioned you have a Supra, we'll have to meet up sometime and swap war stories.

 

I've got to buy a torque wrench today anyway as I need to smack the beetle about a bit.

 

I printed out the settings on the manual from the US site.

 

Do the bolts have any kind of metal washer? Because this jingling sound has appeared a I think it may be caused by this aswell.

Theres one thing that I am not sure about.

 

In the "I don't creak anymore"post, Terminator says:

 

To check the front bolts you need a 17mm deep socket on the end of at least a 6” extension bar for the rears you need a 19mm socket torque settings 92ftlb and 148ftlb respectively.

 

Does that mean a socket that is 17mm deep, or a deep socket with a 17mm diameter?

It is a 17mm socket and it needs to be a deep one.

Most standard 3/4" drive sockets are 38 mm deep the longer ones are usually 75mm.

 

A pit or ramp is great but I don't have one, so a long troque wrench has to do the job for me.

 

Best to use a torque wrench on all bolts, as it is very easy to over do the small ones and very easy to underestimate high torque figures. Never met anyone yet with the mythical torque elbow.

After tightening up all the bolts underneath (some of which were only finger tight!) the knocking persists.

 

Back to the drawing board!

Very nice piccies Mike :) Sorry it's not cured your knocking but very interesting that some of your nuts were very loose as well. Thats's now three out of three of us who've checked them found loose ones.

 

You should have got yourself down to Matts meet today in Maidstone - someone there may have been able to help diagnose it. I've spent all day in the office :-(

 

Did you also check the top suspension mounting points?

 

Could be a dead shock - they are gas filled and not always easy to diagnose. What's the age and mileage of the car? The shocks seem to last about 60k miles. Are they yellow - Toyota Bilstiens?

I am just a little confused, not difficult, I know. But your rear photo shows one of the nuts securing the aluminium cross member bolts, as having a torque of 148flb. I thought all the bolts on the front cross member were at 92ftlb and the higher figure was reserved for the bolts securing the steel one to the rear of the aluminium one. May be someone can confirm.

They are both photographs from the front of the car, under the engine as it were.

 

The diagrams from Mkiv.com don't look particularly accurate when you actually get under the car, so I just took the 4 top ones that are hidden right up inside as 92 ft/lbs and the ones that are lower down as 148 ft/lbs.

 

I'm not overly sure if it's right, but it seemed to "feel" right.
