Paul
Just a quickie Mate has a 4L Wrangler Jeep and has a cracked exhaust manifold, £700 for a new one! As he is looking to sell it in a few mths, is it possible to weld a manifold what with it being cast and all? Sorry for not being Supra related Paul

Chris Wilson
Buy a new or un-cracked secondhand one. Welding cast iron successfully is an art form. It is rarely satisfactory on exhaust manifolds anyway, too much temperature variation. Blocks you can sometimes get away with. If he insists on a welded repair it needs to come off, be properly prepped (V'd out and the crack ends drilled) and welded with the correct filler rod with an internal and external gas purge, in a muffle oven. A stick welder wielded under the bonnet will NOT get the job done!
Paul
Cheers Chris, I was hoping on your feedback, nice one. I'll tell him what you said and leave it down to him to either buy one or find a decent welder to do the work. Thanks again, Paul
Nick_TC
How do you get on TIG'ing cast Chris?? I always found it a right so and so and always had better results with stick, with cast rods and a good pre-heat. It really isnt a big deal. If your friend is selling it, welding it will last for ages. 20 notes down your local engineering firm should get it done.
Chris Wilson
I have never tried to TIG cast iron myself, but seen it done on some pretty irreplaceable vintage stuff. Not brave enough to try that sort of specialist stuff myself. On something less exotic I would use a muffle oven and a stick. Cold welding cast, to me, is a recipe for disaster, although some say that certain rods will allow it. Yeah... right
Paul
Thanks for the extra info Nick, I'll print out what has been said and leave it to him to phone around, at least he is now armed with the comments both of you have made so less likely to get ripped off. Cheers Lads, Paul
