Chris Wilson
can this head really be repaired ? http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ih=010&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3APIC&viewitem=&item=200065057929&rd=1&rd=1ht When an alloy head casting has got that hot, even locally, the material goes soft. the pre heat needed to weld it softens it further and farther. Not a good buy unlesss the world was VERY short of Supra MKIV TT heads. As an aside there is a current thread about someone with no compression on 5 and 6 cylinders. My guess is they may be looking at a similar scenario to this one rather than a simple blown head gasket between the two bores.
Homer
and I was just about to reply with a "this is a job for Chris Wilson" type reply...
Chris Wilson
Nope, gotta be a RARE head to be worth welding. Once they go soft the head gasket fire lands dig in and the gasket loses its seal. If it's a rare head they can be re heat treated, but with an OHC engine the cam jourals then need line boring as it invariably warps, and the head to block face will need skimming, too. Can easily cost 700 plus quid to sort out, as I say, needs to be rare rare rare!
