drive belt tensioner?

Todd

Recommended Posts

Just back home after being stuck in the worst traffic i can remember but whilst driving home started to get a rattle from the engine so stopped and waited for the RAC (that's what you pay them for!)

Anyhoo, I had the car serviced a couple of months back and the (may be wrong here) drive belt tensioner was noisy so it got oiled and that cured the problem, I reckoned this is the same problem and the RAC bod reckoned the same (after I suggested it).

Back home and would like to oil this myself but can anyone tell me how to access it to oil it up?

Cheers

Todd

Searched found it and did it but never cured it :(

The more I listen to it the more it sounds like it's coming from the top of the engine, if you have ever heard a ford cvh and it's tappets on there way out then it's exactly like that!

Trying to get a hold of TDRs dad but I've attached a wav file and if anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it.

Cheers

Holy crap! That sounds bad.

I don't think it's the aux belt tensioner but you can easily test it by taking the belt off and starting the car. The car will run fine for a minute with the belt off.

My money is on a snapped cambelt idler pulley arm. Like this :

Thanks Jake, did just that, had the belt off and started it up but the noise was still there:(

I've just dropped the car off at the garage at the bottom of my road as I know when I'm out my depth.

Should say that the recording is taken right at the top of the engine, doesn't actual sound as bad as it does in the wav file........thank god!

At least you know it's not that now.

If the idler pulley arm has snapped (a known fault with the 2JZ) you'll need to have the crank pulley off, so it might be prudent to replace the cambelt tensioner and crank pulley as well as the cambelt and broken idler arm. Some folks also take the opportunity to change the water pump while the front of the engine is stripped down.

Keep us posted as to what the garage find.

Good luck mate.

well turns out it's the water pump, hell of a play in it but fair play to the garage they clocked it within 2 mins.

Glad it's not something a lot worse but thanks for the advice guys:)

EDIT....will a UK one fit a N/A

I'm glad you figured out it was the water pump and even more happy (although it sucks for you) that you took the time to record the sound, now I know what to listen for.

Sorta unrelated, does anybody know where there's a sound bite of a belt tensioner gone bad?

I have what I think is just a bad fan belt noise. Makes a squeeky noise in the morning when cold starting. Goes away after I've driven for a bit. I'll see if I can't record it and post it up.

The noise was still there when the water pump wasn't being driven by the belt? :conf:

aw frek:blink:

It wasn't as bad that's for sure but there was still a noise.

May be it was just because I had the timing belt cover off and thats what I was hearing!

Will soon find out as fitting the pump tomorrow and I'll get the old one back as well.

Just had the garage on the phone (fitting pump today) and they are telling me that the noise I was hearing was the timing belt itself, apparently it's got a couple of split teeth and frayed spots on it

Cue one new timing belt!

Not doing well considering I'm selling it, water pump, 4 new tyres and timing belt all in the last 2 weeks, at least someone will have peace of mind.

Ouch just read this Todd - at least you know what the problem is now. You still got my old man's number? He'll usually answer at the end of the day if you can't get him during.

You losing one car from the collection or getting something to replace the Supe?

Cheers,

Brian.

TBH the noise started quite close to Livingston and I tried phoning your Dad and I would have just headed straight there but thankfully the garage has a bloke that seems to know his way round the Supra (obviously not as well as your dad ;) )

Really don't know what to get but a GT4 could be a possibility, the 4wd is a definite advantage for getting up my hill, already abandoned the Supra 3 times this year and lost 2 days at work :-(

I'll really miss it as it is still the best all round car I have ever owned.

Yeah my Dad bought one (the black ST205 you probably saw round his) for similar reasons (Imagine the access road deep with snow - fun fun fun) and now spends time loving and cherishing it. He's currently replacing the entire suspension bit by bit, not because there's anything wrong - just because he want's it all to be brand new!!!
