Now I hope that :

a) You appreciate this as I've just got out of bed to post this (Why was I thinking about it in bed)...

and b) I'm right, as I've just got out of bed to post this...

My theory is...

Your laptop thinks it's docked, or at least connected into an external keyboard, one with a numberpad... On my old laptop you could use both keyboards, but the laptops board would type strangely...

Hopefully, there should be a function button which can switch modes, and therefore, solve your problem :D...

you could try just tapping on ALL the keys momentarily, although I don't think it'll help. Sometimes, strangely, windows looses track of whether the shift keys (ctrl & alt usually) are pressed or not, so pressing them again fixes the situation.

Unfortunately the behaviour you're describing doesn't fit at all - e.g. alt-p, alt-o, ctrl-o, ctrl-p hasn't been happening. (You don't have shitloads of stuff coming out of your printer do you ? :D )
