Mitsubishi GTO Twin Turbo - Good, Cack or 'alright'?

I was just wondering if anyone had considered one of these prior to buying their Supra..?

I always seem to get weird looks from people that drive these and wondered if there is some kind of rivalry between Supra / GTO drivers? - I would have expected so, similar specs and that? but not that I've seen any bitterness on here? Perhaps it's just performance car man points?

I think I saw a Top Gear test drive years ago on one which said their handling was a bit rubbish... aren’t some of them four wheel drive?

Anyone have any opinions on these?

Sorry to be a bit vague, but I don't know much about them (outside of Gran Turismo! :eyebrows: ) and wondered what you all thought...

..and no I'm not thinking of buying one... I love my Soop too much!

I considered one, a 6 spd version and I think they are underated. At first I didnt like the look of them and then it grew on me and now I think they are ok. Fell in love with the soop straight away tho. Each to their own but I think they are ok, dont know how well they handle tho and they are not far off the 2 ton mark either.

1900kg! Get real! They are about 1650-1700. Unless they used cast iron tyres I can't see how you can get an extra 200kgs in there!

Anyway - they are nice looking apart from the teeny tiny wheels and the huge wheels arches they live in, and they go alright.

Some have 4 wheel steering (passive??), which you could look at as a bonus, or as adesign compromise trying to make up for a shortfall somewhere else - who knows - but it's expensive to fix apparently.

I considered a GTO, but really wanted a Supra all along, that's the better car all round (looks, performance, not looking dated) IMHO.

Looked at both before settling on the Supra (but in all honesty I'd already made my mind up).

Went to a place that sold both and chatted to the owner. He reckoned that 2 of the GTO's he's sold recently had to have the driveshafts replaced shortly afterwards, so he thinks there's an inherent weakness. That was all the convincing I needed. :)

Before I bought my Supra I test drove 6. I did not think I would get to own a supra purely for insurance so I looked at 4 private sale with mods and a couple from Jap importers from autotrader that I had found. I have driven a 300Z twin turbo and I thought that was better than the GTO.

A modded GTO was better but I did not enjoy the overall experience. The handling was not as good as the Supra or 300z and it did not feel as pokey as them too.

The interior has nothing on the Supra or 300Z. I liked the look of them but did not enjoy driving it like the others. The 300z's I decided not to go for as I prefered the look and drive of the supra. Still there are some very good looking 300Z's with the rear body kits to make it look like its got curves but Supra won it for me.

Just my 2p's worth. Still like the GTO and the 300Z but on an overall package the Supra wins hands down for me. So I bought a Supra :D

Cheers,

I did a good bit of reading up on them a while back.... iirc they are about 1760KG weight wise. All are 4WD, the top model is 4WS which is a 3.0TT. There's also the MR variant that ditches the 4WS and a lot of the pointless eletric gadgets you normally get to get the weight down to around 1600KG. Then there's the SR version which is naturally aspirated and very slow as a result! The engines are a V6 design rather than our inherently stronger and naturally balanced straight 6 and from what I read, they are quite prone to bottom end failure with chocolate big ends and the like so not great scope for cheap modding.
