Single V Twins

After watching Leon put in some decent times at pod on Sunday It got me wondering about the single v twins debate again.

Now I know for ultimate power a big single seems to be the way to go, but what would be best for say around 500bhp.

Would twins be more driveable on the road?

What options are out there for the twin route?

Are there any twins that will work on the stock manifold or is that a bad idea?

Whats the cost difference between the two?

Those few questions will do for a start.

Discus :D

From my limited experience, twins seem to give almost lightswitch boost, where as the singles seem a lot more linear, (they can still come in with a kick, but not as sudden as some of the twinned cars I've driven).

IMHO, a small single would make the better 500bhp road car

Personally, I can't answer much about the twin set-up as we don't do them. Sorry.

guys, believe me, Leons is light years from a regular 2835 set up.

We could replicate the power for half the cost IMHO. Also the 2835 cars I have driven seem very laggy compared to an equivelent single. They do look nice though ;)

back to Johns question, HKS pretty much have the twins covered. GReddy did/do make a set up. In theory they should be nice and drivable, but in reality it seems pretty different

Thanks for all the replys, It not something I plan to do, well not until my nubers come up. I was just interested to know what options were out there and the comparison to the singles that seem so popular at the moment.

Just a couple more questions though.

Apart from the 1 off custom manifolds are there any cast manifolds for singles?

Are there and twins that fit the stock manifold?

Are hybrids really a cost effective and worth while option?

At the moment, Im happy with it how it is. I do however like to know all the options for reference in the future.

The whole Supra comunity seems to have gone a little single mad at the moment - im not saying thats a bad thing at all! - but its nice to know of other options especially if you dont want of cant afford massive power figures.

The only other thing that puts me off singles is all the talk of cracking tubular manifolds.

TBH I think you're gonna be happy with any option you go with. It just depends on the depth of your pockets.

Hybrids are the cheapest option because you dont have to replace much else (lucky you have the UK spec). They can run better on the 550 injectors. And you could be pushing around 500 bhp on them.

Having said that, if you search you will find some reports of failing hybrids too, its very much pick and chose with reliability on a lot of aftermarket parts.

Just to add my two pence worth again, I've also never driven a car with hybrids that made me think it was anything other than a bit nippy.

We, Vortex, (unashamed plug there), do a nice budget single kit that uses an adaptor on to the stock manifold, allowing you to run a small single. JB has the prototype one on his car and we're just waiting for it to be mapped for a rough power figure. But having driven it, hybrids don't come close.

IIRC Directed Engineering do a cast manifold for singles. We're approaching 20 single kits to date, and as yet, none of them have any signs of cracking manifolds. I do appreciate it's far more likely on a tubular manifold, but we haven't seen it happen yet. (where's the wood!)

I don't think there are any other turbos available to bolt onto the stock manifold as a direct fit... And if there were, would they be for a JDM or Export design? - I stand to be corrected, but I'm fairly sure there aren't any.

Oi - those hybrids I used to have cracked a 9.5s 0-100mph, that's a tad more than nippy, Harwood :p And even with my crapulous launches I could get 1/4mile terminals of 116-120mph.

No, it's not single turbo territory but they were still faster than stockers :) A *good* set of hybrids are worth it in my opinion, and they are fantastic around town, with that first turbo coming on song instantly. Alas, I've no idea who hybridised my ones so it shall forever remain a mystery...

OK, I agree, yours were quicker than most, (in fact yours are the only ones I've actually thought got good results).

But I never drove your car, so my opinions stand. :p (based on my limited experience ;) )
