Unavoidable Internet Site Pop-ups? V.Annoying

I visited a website last night and as soon as the home page loaded, a pop-up type of screen showed up covering the entire webpage. Scrolling up and down only made it follow me. I couldn’t work out a way of getting rid of it without actually just clicking the link. This really p!ssed me off and made the site unusable. Is there a way of closing these types of pop-ups? I think they’re Java Script.

Was it one of 'those' sites? ;)

It had every chance of being, but no it wasn't ;)

This was the site:

http://www.rom-freaks.net

http://noscript.net/ (if you're using Firefox)

I'm on IE

If your in IE, cant you go to tools, pop up blocker, turn on pop up blocker

I've got google's pop up blocker but that didn't do anything, I'll give that a try then.

Are you talking about a "same-page" pop-up? Basically it's not a new window that pops up but a JavaScript image/box that pops up in the same page instead?

If this is the case it could be difficult to get rid off. You would have to actually know JavaScript in order to get rid of it and it would be different for every site.

Pop-up blockers will not work with these types of advertisements because technically aren't pop-ups.

Yes that's correct. I thought as much. They might as well just re-direct you to the other site as they're pretty much nothing else you can.

:D

They are really distracting and they lose a lot of visitors over it. I don't know why they choose to advertise this way. I normally just leave immedietely. :)

It's literally the entire screen with this one. Just had a though - if it's Java Script, would disabling Java in the browser options work?
