Dolphin massacres in Japan.

Cultural differences apart, I personally fail to see any reason whatsoever why whales and dolphins are killed. To see dolphins killed in the way the following video depicts is mind numbing and has upset me deeply. I really doubt that anything can be done about it, but theres an on line petition below too if anyone feels as strongly as I do.

The video....WARNING, this is not nice - http://www.glumbert.com/media/dolphin

The petition - http://www.petitiononline.com/golfinho/

I'm kind of curious as to why you guys are so upset. Is it because of the way in which they are killed or that they are killed at all?

Would you prefer it if the Dolphins were killed on a factory ship far out to sea so that you don't have to see it and, by extension, presume that it isn't happening?

In my opinion this is no more abhorrent than knowing that chickens dies in their millions to feed us. That cattle die in their millions to feed us. That pigs die in their millions to feed us.

You could even argue that the dolphins led a better life up until the moment of death than many animals bred for our consumption.

Totally agree,

I havnt seen the vid so dont know how they are killed or treated.

But at the end of the day, they are killed for food just like we do in this country

Well, for me, its both....the fact that they are being killed and especially the way they are being killed.

Firstly, I dont see the need to kill whales or dolphins. They are wild animals, not bred or farmed specifically for slaughter. They are not an essential element in the human food chain.

Secondly, I consider the way these highly intelligent mammals are killed is barbaric and extremely cruel. This is a way of killing that we would not tolerate if it were cattle or sheep etc.

I eat meat and fish, and sit well with the mild hypocrisy that surrounds these industries....I am personally placing the humane killing of say, beef cattle or sheep and the inhumane killing of whales and dolphins very far apart.

I feel the same about seal culling (with clubs and spikes), big game hunting (for sport) and fox hunting (with horses and hounds) etc. For each of these questionable traits of the human race there are cultural, economic and traditional arguments for....and basic personal, humane and intelligent arguments against.

If a mammal such as a whale or dolphin absolutely has to be killed (allowing for the 'cultural differences'), then for humanities sake put a bullet through its brain. If you cant, leave it alone.

I eat meat and fish

I worked on a salmon farm for a few years and you should see the way the fish were culled, gills slit and then thrown in a tub to let them bleed themselves to death.

Don't really see the difference between them and dolphins myself but that's just me :p

Is that a Sushi restaurant?

Funny enough no,

These animals are very very smart indeed, this is like people killing apes for food.

Sick, the panic they must feel and having the blood all around them is horrid.

The far east have alot to answer for in thier treatment of animals. Lets not forget that dog fighting over there is still legal, and they have been known to feed live cattle to zoo animals for kicks.

very very nasty video, im not squemish but even i had to look away at some parts.

i agree it is a very brutal way of killing them and something needs to be done, especially the amount of blood pumped back into the ocean afterwards

but as others have said, it is a tradition, just like fox hunting is/was in britain, but that is a whole different arguement altogether.

petition signed :)

Interesting points of view, and I'm no more than the owner of one of them. It's universally normal to kill animals, its just a shame that these particular ones are killed in this barbaric way.

Pigs are a good point...very intelligent animals.

Maybe one day there will be a petition for them too. I wouldn't sign it though.

I swam with Dolphins once. They didn't try to kill me and they were very friendly.

Dolphins have good PR.

I like meat.

No animal should be made to suffer, regardless of intelligence.

I'm afraid to watch the film and would rather remain ignorant.

I like BBQs too.
