Fuel tax going up

More than likely. This is the rise that they froze a while back finally coming into play. It's odd that the fuel prices are creeping up though seeing as petrol is the cheapest it's been. I wonder how much of it is a mark up from the forecourts and what the breakdown of costs is at the moment.

SO, the budget has been delayed, meaning they can put they "automatic" fuel duty escalator on, hoping we won't notice, and then do us all a HUGE favour by removing it (maybe) in the budget, along with great fanfare no doubt, and with the election just around the corner they will probably tell us more lies about how they cut duty to "help the hard working families blah blah blah".

Yeah, Right, that'll get my vote

Wankers.

OIL is cheap right now, but we are a net importer of oil. Our currency's exhange rate Vs the rest of the world is down the pan thanks to our fearless - sorry feckless - leaders, so petrol and in fact everything (as near as dammit) is becomming more and more expensive to us UK citizens with every stupid decision they make.

Think it's bad now? Imagine what it would be like if oil were back up at $150/barrel instead of $40.

  • 5 months later...

Another price hike tonight...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/8230185.stm

A two pence rise in fuel duty will come into effect from midnight, the third increase in nine months.

Stephen Glaister, director of road users' pressure group RAC Foundation, told the BBC the government's latest rise "will hit everybody hard".

When VAT is included, the increase will actually total 2.3p. The average price of petrol across the UK is about 105p per litre.

The government says the extra duty is needed to help fund public investment.

Public investment in transport related things or are drivers funding everything else as usual?

Prices here currently vary between 101.9p and 109.9p a litre for normal UL, super is 105.9p to 117.9p a litre (according to petrolprices.com check for my postcode) - the price of crude oil seems to be on the rise generally but fell this week, $69 a barrel at the moment.

Are we to expect massive increases in fuel costs if it rises? Why is the price going up? Is this why they released the Lockerbie bomber? Should a cartel like OPEC be able to influence the market like it does? Why don't the Russians try and price everyone else out of the market?

They [that being the stupid bunch of incompetant sods that I still can not believe people voted for on the last election], still use the main excuse for hiking up prices is that it persuades people to stop using cars. Which planet do they really live on?

Planet London where it can be more cost effective to use the extensive public transport alternative instead of a car / parking / congestion charge combo... unlike most other locations in the UK.

Actually, I don't think that is the excuse they're using now. I think it's acknowledged that the govt has real financial problems, and is massively in debt. I think they've already announced spending cuts. Basically - they need the money, and I doubt this will be the only way they'll get it.

On the news they commented that the Conservatives hadn't said much about it today - because if they win the next election, they're well aware they'll be inheriting debt and will need the money themselves.

It's their 'pricing people off the roads' tactics. Make it so expensive that those who cannot afford it have to sell up and use public transport. This helps the government churn our rubbish about how they're single-handedly saving the planet by reducing CO2 from cars, and curing congestion at the same time.

Those who still somehow manage to keep their cars on the road will simple carry on unwittingly paying for everything :)
