Some of you may know 2 years i ago i went in for a operation which invloved drilling a hole in the back of my head where my ear is (amongst other things), unfortuantly a trip to the hospital for a check up has shown that i need to have another operation as the problem has now come back

So i had a letter come through saying my pre assesment is on the 11th June and my op is on the 22nd June, quick for the NHS but arghhhhh !! :(

Sorry to hear you are having to have another op.

If you dont mind me asking, what is wrong and why does it require an operation to correct?

The Condition I have is Cholestatoma, which is caused by a damaged ear canal at birth...because of the ear canal I have been prone to ear infections, this has constantly caused my ear drum to be perforated, thanks to a incompetent doctor it was not diagnosed until I woke one morning about 3 years ago with blood pouring out of my ear...

Anyway due to the fact my ear drum has been perforated for a long time the skin renewal process in the ear has gone through the ear drum and in to a cavity inside where the ear bones and where my main nerve to the left side of my face is and this has caused a hard ball of skin that was eroding a 1mm thick piece of skull which separates my ear cavity from my brain cavity, therefore in order to remove it they had to drill a hole behind my ear to remove the problem without killing my main nerve to my face.

This procedure has to be done because the "hard ball of skin" can destroy the main nerve and cause the left side of my face to be paralysed for life, moving on from this if the bone that separated the ear cavity to the brain was breached then I could have a Brain abscess or meningitis which can cause death in a matter of hours....

They rectified the issue 2 years ago but it has come back which unfortunately can happen...

So there you go :(

Thats horrible. I know just how painful ear infections can be. I have had way more then I can count so far, easily 20+. I have had a perforated ear drum a few times too. Not nice waking up to find pus and blood coming out your ear, although from the sounds of it I got off lightly with just a dose of tinitus.

I hope this op sorts it once and for all.

Sorry to hear this Richard! I hope all goes well!

Best wishes matey...:)

I used to have ear trouble when i was a kid, always had ear aches in both ears, perferated ear drums, countless hearing tests, operations on my ears...:(

I had "gromits" inserted to remove wax build up which didnt work and then i had "T tubes" which were inserted and it honestly worked!

On my 15th birthday, i had my last hearing test which i passed and have never gone back since...touch wood!

As for my "T tubes", they worked themselves out of my ears, and one morning, there they were on my pillow...:)
