R3DG3CKO ROB
Is it reccomended to have the twin electric fans on a BPU Supra? I'm currently running my N/A without the fan shroud as it doesn't fit with the Top Secret Bonnet... I'm considering getting the electric fans fitted when I have the conversion done but is it a waste of money? Real question is; does anyone run a bpu TT without the fan shroud? Chris Wilson
It's extremely bad practice to run without the shroud, fan efficiency will have fallen dramatically. When the weather gets hotter you may have serious problems. You may get them NOW in heavy traffic. To sell a bonnet whereby a major item of the cars cooling system has to be removed is just ludicrous. Electric fans can move nothing like the volume of air that the engine driven viscous one can, in hot conditions, they aren't in the same league. I dare not suggest the proper course of action, but I am sure you can guess....
R3DG3CKO ROB
So I have two realistic options then...? 1: Buy a modified Fan Shroud which will fit my bonnet 2: Buy the Electric Fans and risk it overheating?
Chris Wilson
A shroud works by sealing the fan tips to stop air spilling around the edges. As far as i can see the only place a bonnet might interfere is at the top, where the only mod I can think of would un shroud the fan. Some people get by with electric fans, some suffer overheating. I'd sell the bonnet and go back to stock myself, and not risk it. I sense this may not be too appealing to you though Can't you modify the bonnet to clear? If you cut enough out of it it *may* get close to the weight of a stock one....
R3DG3CKO ROB
I've gone through such a nightmare with the bonnet now, I really wouldn't want to sell it... Why would the weight of the bonet make a difference???
Chris Wilson
It wouldn't, to the cooling, but i have never understood why anyone would buy an expensive carbon panel that's HEAVIER than the metal one it replaces. Seems very counter productive, cost wise. Especially when they don't even fit.
R3DG3CKO ROB
The bonnet weighs about half of what the original did... I carried both on my own so can def confirm that...
Chris Wilson
Some seem to manage to weigh more than a stock one, despite being carbon fibre. You have obviously got one of the better ones, weight wise. Can't you trim whatever bit of the bonnet catches the shroud, or would that show externally as a hole then, or something? R3DG3CKO ROB
It's the structural part inside the bonnet that catches on the shroud, so probably wouldn't be advisable to start hacking into it I don't understand why someone would design a bonnet to fit a car and then it doesn't fit! I think I'm gonna have to go for the electric option and keep my fingers crossed...
paul mac
i had to do a slight mod on the shroud as my bonnet fowled it, there is quite a lot of room to trim it, i post a pic when i get home tonight

paul mac
here you go mate, dont know what the underside of your bonnet looks like so theres a pic of that as well, i made the cut out first then laid the piece of carbon fibre over it and drew the shape from the inside, its just epoxy'ed in
Chris Wilson
Very neat and totally effective, I think Rob ought to plagiarise that idea

Homer
Rob, the Top secret one fouls on the very top doesn't it? Most have a cut a small chunk out of the top to get it to fit. Edit: You can see the very top of the shroud is cut back here: http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/vbpicgallery.php?do=big&p=8874
