Buffer/Polisher Advice!!

Havard

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have reserved a power devil 150mm variable speed polisher for buffing the car. After reading a couple of other threads I have become a bit worried.

Do you need to be a complete numpty to damage your paintwork with one of these things or is there a large skill factor involved. I have got swirl marks in my paint and I can't afford to get the car mopped at this moment in time.....

I was going to give the car a light polishing as I think I would enjoy the results of my efforts rather than banging someone £200 notes every 6 months.....:(

Advice please!!

H.

Keep the buffer slow, and dont hang around in the same place for too long.

Basically all you can do is burn the paintwork, this is where the laquer gets a bit too warm and basically moves, making a dull patch which can be hard to get out, if its bad enough it will need repainting.

If your car has the standard paint it shouldnt be too bad, but some repainted cars can have areas where there isnt much paint, or not very thick, to get around this you can buy a machine which measures how much paint there is on a panel, but they are rediculiously exspensive so just use good judgement and common sence you shouldnt have a problem.

When im back from my holiday im going to invest in a porter cable and some nice pads and cutting polishes, any member in teh north can use my services if they so wish :D will be cheap enough

Take this and you will not regret. You will just need 110V transformer and little cable fiddling to convert it :)

You can also add few 4'' sonus pads (2 white and 1 yellow/blue), few polishing towels (small ones), one or 2 big ones and 3,5'' small fixing plate. I would advice also to take Sonus clay bars (green ones) with grey one gratis :p If you will decide this way - I will pm you, because I need one or 2 thing from there, so will be cheaper to ship them :D

PS. you can use "DAD" discount code to get 20% off all Sonus stuff i think before 17 June.

I have one, use it and see effect, machine is very forgiving and doing great job. As you are white car owner, you can use G3 compounds later without worrying about micro scratches - you cannot see them on white car anyway :p

I do not know power devil mark, hopefully it is orbital not rotary one, because rotary one is rather for more experienced users. Do NOT budget on polisher, because it can cost you more then 200 pounds to recover paint, if you will furbar it :(

Cheers Ric!

This buffer is £15 as the box has been damaged. The buffer has been tested so I can't see the problem tbh!!;)

It should have been £50 RRP. I was just going to put a little bit of Colour magic on the pad and give it a quick going over and not go over the edges much as this is where you remove the paint too fast.........correct?

I ideally wanted a full mop of the car but I have spent too much already and the missus is giving me shit.........:D

i use the 7424 good machine and safe as well , i might be able to source one for you if your interested give me a pm later

Yep Peter, wouldn't mind a price on one of those as it is something I will use often. Was going to get a proper pro job done at some poit aswell.

I am just worried that in trying to get the paintwork "perfect" I will end up making it worse......

Hang fire on ordering a Porter Cable guys - there is a uk equivalent coming out later this month / july called the Ulitmate Detailing machine - checkout detailingworld.com

Will work out cheaper as its on a UK plug - iv got my name down for one as soon as they are available.
