Taping The Hot Side

Ok, im installing my EGT and have drilled the hole in the Hot Side of the turbo but i just can't tap it the bit just goes round and doesn't bite Any ideas?? At this point im just gonna hammer the f'ing bose into it

You've drilled a hole too small or you have a non tapered tap?

You should have 2 taps, one a tapered starter tap and one a non tapered full tap.

What size tap (thread size) is it?

Ok, i have no idea what you said there

It's a 1/8npt i belive. The hole isn't too big YET. Im using just the one piece that i assume is called the tap. It's a drill bit like thing. Im winding it in to cut the thread but it's just not taking and going rouns and round. I'm scared to drill it anymore incase i go past the point of no return

A 1/8 NPT tap should have an 8.5mm hole drilled first.

Does this look about the right size for the tap you have (i.e. the tap isn't bigger than 8.5mm diameter?).

Yeah that's right.

And its still not taking?

No, just goes round and round and doesn't bite.

Get a 10mm drill and just chamfer the top of the hole so it has a 45 degree edge, just to about 1mm down. This will help start the tap biting. Then push down hard on the bugger as you turn it!

Edit - Make sure you don't power the 10mm drill all the way through. Turn it by hand to prevent a mishap!

Ok, after just trying again it started to take ever so slightly and then stopped. So got the insert bose and with a screwdriver pushing against it with my belly and my spanner, i managd to get it in and stay.

Oh, and whan tapping you're supposed to go in half a turn then go a full turn back to clear the swarf from the thread cutting face otherwise it jams up... and lubricate it too

Ok, after just trying again it started to take ever so slightly and then stopped. So got the insert bose and with a screwdriver pushing against it with my belly and my spanner, i managd to get it in and stay.

So have you cut a full thread or just jammed the boss in?

Have you tapped any holes before?

If not it would be wise to have a practice on a scrap piece of metal.

As said above, you need to go back and forth only cutting a ¼ to ½ half turn each time. Take it slowly and you'll get there fine in the end.

and get yourself a Zeus book so you know all the correct drill sizes to the holes you tap

Eeerrr, not totally jammed it did cut a thread slightly and after making sure it was actually go in with thee help of my screwdriver i just had to wind it in more.

Well my first ever try was on my vaccum source off the turbo. Worked fine

Next time will be in a couple of weeks for my new catch can. What do you use to lubricate it??

i normally use normal 3 in one oil, but you can buy a cutting fluid from most engineering places.

What do you use to lubricate it??

Mostly any oil will be better than nothing
