Looks like I'm selling the Supra

I've been wanting a new career path for a while now, and a few weeks ago while visiting an E-Type specialist, and spending some time in the workshop with the staff, I've decided that's what I want to do. I've just received an unconditional offer from the local college for starting an IMIAL L2 Dip Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles (Direct Entry) course, which condenses the regular 2 year course to a single year. I'm also looking for a local apprenticeship with a main dealer, as I can transfer straight into that from any point during my course.

Anyway, unfortunately I do not qualify for Government paid tuition fees because of my age, so the only way I can really afford to do this is by selling my Supra. :( I could potentially stretch myself a bit and hang on to it, but even if I did, I wouldn't be able to afford to run it for a few years on the sort of money I'll be on, and it's just too nice and too valuable to have sat around doing nothing. It's heartbreaking, as I'm sure most of you know I have put a hell of a lot of time, money and effort into this car, and it really is a great car.

I've not decided how I'm going to go about selling it, whether to do it myself or get JM imports to do it, but I thought I'd post up this thread to see if there's any interest before deciding what to do. I may also resort to breaking it, but that's very much a last resort. PLEASE DO NOT PM ME ASKING FOR PARTS OR PRICES OF PARTS!!! If I decide to break it, I will post up a thread, then you can ask!!!

Anyway, the link to my build thread is in my Sig for those who haven't seen it, but you will need a spare hour to go through it all!!

I'll give you a condensed version for those unfamiliar with it;

I picked up the car in October 2014 as a fresh import from Japan from Torque GT. It was a stock, 1997 VVTi Tiptronic at the time. I have taken it from stock, to BPU, and to the brilliant single turbo conversion it is now fitted with. As an all round package, the car is very difficult to beat, as I specified all the parts myself, with the priority always being quality, performance and reliability, which obviously comes at a considerable cost! But as a result, the spec list of this car is very special. Those of you who know these cars well will see immediately that it is fitted with all the right bits to make this a fast, but usable, and ultimately reliable GT.

As well as the performance modifications, I have spent a lot of time and money making the car look how I want, and making sure that it is in excellent order. It has also had a very thorough course of rust prevention, and as a result, I believe the shell is probably among the best you will find anywhere.

Everything has been done with an OEM+ theme, so while the car is quite heavily modified, it looks like a very clean, stock car. Things like the gorgeous Recaro Trendline seats, with custom seat heating installed, look like they were always meant to be there, and little exterior touches, like the UK spec rear bumper and S2000 aerial, all contribute to a very good looking, and subtle car. Well, as subtle as a white mk4 Supra can be :D

Here's a breakdown of the work done to the car:

Lots more info in the build thread though.

There are a couple of bits that need attention, which I will sort before the sale, unless the buyer wants it as is.

The mapping on the Syvecs needs to be finished. I will either get this done by Sam Borgman @ TDi, who is currently mapping another one of these, or if I get Jurgen to sell it, he will get either Ryan and/or Romain to do it. It drives fine most of the time, but it does occasionally not change up as soon as it should, and there is an occasional 'hiccup' where the engine bogs down a little, which I suspect is to do with the throttle mapping, and is occasionally accompanied by a small boost spike. Everything on the Syvecs shows it is running well and safely though, which can be seen on the Toucan, and has been checked by me, Romain and Ryan. Ryan did a great job with fixing most of the issues with the initial map, but due to personal reasons and the lack of any local Syvecs mappers I wasn't able to get this finished. As a result, the car hasn't covered that many miles since the turbo was fitted, so this is a very fresh install.

The reason I have mentioned this, and not had it done before posting this, is just in case someone may be interested in buying the car, and fitting a 6 speed or a DCT conversion, in which case all of the mapping would need altering anyway. If this was the case, it would save me getting it mapped, and I could reduce the price of the car accordingly.

Other than that, the front bumper needs a respray due to flaking on the edge, which again I will do before the sale, unless someone specifically wants it as is (in case of fitting a painted lip etc)

The car has had 3 services in the 2.5 years it has been here, once with Torque GT, one by my friendly mechanic, and then again at Whifbitz last year. It is due another now, which I will do before the sale. When it was having the single turbo conversion fitted, Whifbitz did the engine oil, the transmission fluid, and the diff fluid. It has also had two lots of Toyota red coolant. Whifbitz also fitted a new OEM crank pulley, new plugs, and I fitted a brand new battery from Halfords last month. Other than that, I replaced the coilpacks and clips with new OEM Denso items.

So it starts on the button, ticks over perfectly, makes no untoward noises, and doesn't smoke (except the usual condensation on startup and the odd puff of black fuel smoke occasionally) It holds its temperature perfectly. It feels like a very healthy engine.

There are a few bits to go with the car too, including a spare tiptronic gearbox if the buyer wants to buy it, and tailored covers for the Recaro seats. There's probably a few other bits too.

As I said, this isn't a sale thread as of yet, but when it is ready for sale I will be pricing it at £23k with the mapping sorted and the bumper painted, which I think is a fair price considering the spec, and all of the above. I don't have an exact figure, but I know that I have spent well in excess of that amount just on parts and labour since getting the car two and a half years ago.

Anyway, it is sad to be leaving Supra ownership for a 4th time, but needs must. I would possibly consider taking something cheaper, sensible and tidy in px.

Cheers mate, knowing how good your car is that is high praise indeed :)

At this price point, you could either buy a fresh import tt6 on stock turbos, or a 6 speed single that's been in the UK for a while, but the spec and condition wouldn't compare.

Sad to read this Jason, but needs must!

I've always enjoyed following the build and it is definitely one of my favourites on the forum.

That is a very competitive price - I think you're underselling personally, though it should definitely secure you a quick sale! :)

The ultimate GT car and the setup that would be my first choice if I returned to ownership, wonderful car and a fantastic investment

Discussed so so many times but the ease and comfort of driving an auto in UK traffic conditions is lost on so many who have not even tried it

Best of luck with your future plans, appreciation is in a different class with an E Type, I test drove a V12 about 10 years ago and I talked myself out it and brought a 928 instead, it was £22K !! god knows what it would be worth now

Thanks guys :) hopefully it will go to a good home. One of the main reasons I'm tempted to get Jurgen to sell it is that it will go abroad, which would make getting rid a bit easier.

I remember a few years ago a club member was selling a clean, white, freshly painted e type coupe (2+2 maybe) rolling shell on here for circa £10k. Was up for sale for ages too. Even as a 2+2 that shell would be worth £30k+ now.

My dad's e type comes back on Friday, I'll try and sort a video out as it sounds amazing

Nnnooooo :( people sell up and say they'll stay on here but they never really do. Surprised at the price to be honest, too cheap!

Ha ha, don't make me feel guilty. :D

No danger of me going anywhere, I'll still be here when Branners has boarded the place up and kicked everyone out. :rlol:

still got to top the 20,000 post mark. Just 843 posts to go :D

  • 6 months later...

Quick update :)

I still have the Supra, and although I will probably still sell it at some point next year, things have developed which means the urgency has gone...

Been at college since September now studying mechanics, and it turns out that I absolutely love it :D I had 3 exams a few weeks back, and got 93%, 100% and 100%, which according to one of my tutors is the highest they can recall any student having got, ever :D

Anyway, an apprenticeship opportunity came up with Volvo, and I'm glad to say that I fought off the competition and got the job, which I start on Monday. Instead of me having to pay to attend college, Volvo pay for all my tuition, and i obviously get paid for working there too, so its really a game changer for me.

I've been using my Supra as a daily , even at college, but im not going to put loads of miles on the Supra sat in local traffic, so I'll be buying a cheap diesel run about in the next week or so, and putting the Supra away for a few months.

Except for the fuel economy (which is actually very reasonable for the sort of car it is), she has been a perfect daily drive for the last few months. 100% Reliable, responsive, fast, and comfortable. Quite incredible really for a 20 year old, modified car making almost twice the factory power and torque! :D
