Sky router help

Recommended Posts

I was due to have a Sky router delivered to start my BB service on the 15th but it got lost in transit. They have now sent out another but it won't get here until Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

I've asked them if they can help me set up an old netgear router to tide me over but they refused. Is there anyway around this?

I remember when I first got their BB...

If i remember correctly somewhere in the small print it says that you must use the equipment they provide you with and they were randomly polling the routers and cutting people off who were using their own routers. Was a while ago so things may have changed.

I've had this same problem recently. My Sky router broke, and Sky wanted £30 for a new one. I got 2 non SkyNetgear routers from friends FOC, but my IT tech mate couldn't set either up as sky wouldn't provide the necessary details. We managed to get a free Netgear router from someone else and it worked immediately.

If you already have a Sky router you can hack into it and get the username and password out and use another router no problem. If you have't got a working router to get the details from you can't do anything because Sky won't tell you them. The cutting people off thing is a myth, they've never done that but it does say you are supposed to use their kit. They see it as no different than your Sky box - because they control the specs they can support it.

I'm afraid unless you have your existing log in details there is nothing you can do, if you already have one of the older routers then you can use the hack here

http://www.philipnicosia.com/2006/10/03/sky-broadband-username-and-password/

to extract the hidden log in IE sky password, details, a lot of people do use other routers, because the routers supplied are rubbish, skydon'tt allow this butdon'tt seem to make much fuss, however it is part of the contract, not to use other products, and they could close your account.

If you are getting one of the new N sky routers, they are not too bad but still slower than N at 72 mb rather than 130mb.

As said you cannot actually connect to the sky provider without the hidden sky user name and password, which you cannot access without the hack!

all you where doing is just logging into the router home page.

Hmm..I thought the PPP username and password was visible through the router admin screen.

is the info on this link is true then one doesnt even need to log into the router.

Sky will not let you use any other routers, trust me I've tried :p I think they must've saved the MAC ID against your given IP or something. I managed to connect but would just get cut off again.

If you go on to some of the sky user forums and take a look, you will find plenty of people that are using different routers successfully, after hacking the hidden sky password/ user name.

The sky user name that you are given with your router/contract is NOT the same as the hidden one that they wont give you, check out the link i gave, but there are other hacks for some of the other sky routers, but no all.

Of course you can, you just need the user name and password which you can extract from your old router as I've said. I've been using a different router for a couple of years now. The wireless on my original Sky router would shut down after 10 minutes or so if you stressed it by transferring a big file or something so I switched to a buffalo which is much more stable.
