Changing Fan Belt

Hi guys, just a quick one. Ordered a new aux/fan belt earlier and I'm going to fit it myself this weekend. Read all the guides/how-to's but once the belt is on, do I have to 'do the tensioner up' again, or does it happen by itself.

I know it's an auto tensioner, but since I'm loosening it, does it need to be done even once when the belt is changed? Also, is there any grease needed anywhere, I gather not since it's a belt.

Cheers guys, your knowledge is appreciated.

The short answer is it all happens by itself.......

get a 14mm spanner and per the guides put it on the tensioner (horizontally towards the battery) lean down on it and you will see how the tensioner works.......if you pulled the belt totally off the tensioner will release to a good inch or so further right (toward the battery)........the hardest thing when refitting is applying enough force with one hand to force the tensioner back enough to have the other hand loop the new belt over it.........two pairs of hands makes this a doodle.........

Nice one guys, will give it a go on Sat. Is there anything that can go wrong with this? Stupid question I know but want to know the potential problems before they occur.

Thanks

You can shear the bolt on the pulley........

I did this by having the spanner/socket and ratchet at too high an angle. The further you have your choice of tool above horizontal the more torque to put through the nut/bolt in the pulley before you start moving the tensioner back.

To give you the most leverage and minimise the force on the nut/bolt the spanner should be in the same plane as the tensioner but then this points the spanner down the back of the rad where its difficult to access and get the required force on it.

having the spanner at least horizintal should mean the bolt survives :)

I use a breaker on the tensioner and have done everytime, makes it easy. Never broken anything either

Definately.

It's already been said that it's awkward trying to release the tension with one hand and fitting the belt with the other. The force you need to apply to release the tension is higher than what I expected so like terminator suggested you'll need more leverage to make it easier.

I couldn't use my socket wrench and socket as the access wasn't great, so I used a 14mm ring spanner with the other end cut off and a tube slid over to give me the extra leverage.

The access is better on a NA there is no intake pipe in the way......

The guy mentioned what could go wrong, I have sheared this bolt using a breaker bar so told him as a warning. You and many others i suspect have both done it fine but the nearer you go towards the vertical (and you have to angle the bar up to clear the battery enough) with your breaker bar the higher and higher the torque gets on the tensioner bolt, before the tensioner will move.

I don't suppose it's worth using a torque wrench instead of a breaker bar is it? I know they shouldn't be used for undo/doing up bolts, only to torque them once tight.

My thinking is, if the torque is set just a tad higher than the torque needed to move the tensioner, if I apply too much leverage, it shouldn't shear the bolt but the torque wrench would go 'slack'?

Reasonable suggestion or am I talking out of my ar$e? lol

Wrap it around everything barr the far top right pulley (power steering pulley) and then pull the belt, the tensioner will release enough for you to slide it over the PAS pulley. I'm sure that's how I did it, no farting about with sockets or bars. It was 4 years ago i did it though  And I am 6'4" and 17 stone (of which not much fat) which might help with that some what!!! ;)

I just used the handle from my trolley jack as a lever, no sockets or spanners required. Just stick it engine side of the belt downwards and lever off from the power steering pulley. simply lift the belt off the power steering pulley. Easy peasy. Fitment is the reverse obviously.

Well the fan belt went fine, only took 10 mins. :)

But I'm replacing my anti-squeal shims on the front breaks and the 2 bolts I need to undo on the drivers side have seized :( Passenger's side only took 20 mins but I've been trying to loosen these for about an hour!

Hopefully WD40 will do the trick!

Well I have just managed to round off the top bolt I was trying to undo so now it will have to go to a garage :( It's so annoying considering it's a 10 min job and now I'm going to have to pay someone to do it

Where you buy fan belt and how much you pay for that ?

Ordered it from Steve Manley at Oxford Toyota. After discounts it was £30 delivered :)
