Supra Coast ‘n’ Country Cruise ’08 - Sunday 20th July 2008

The Idea

I’ve been thinking about sorting out a club meet in the North East for a little while now as other than the usual Jap North East on a monthly basis, its been a canny while since local supra owners met up.

Unfortunately, it has taken the tragic news of Lewis’ death a little over a week and a half ago to spur me on and get this sorted.

The idea is to have this drive in memory of Lewis but with the emphasis on celebrating the car that he was so nuts about and that unites us all in this club. The overwhelming response in the thread that brought us the bad news is typical of the club spirit (most of the time ;)) and I hope that as many of you as possible can attend this and make it a day to remember.

The Drive

I’ve sorted out a route (test drove it last Saturday) that takes in arguably some of the finest coastline in the UK (Northumberland) before swinging inland from Bamburgh to Wooler, then skirts the Simonside hills down to Rothbury and the Cheviots before bringing you back into Tyneside.

The majority of the roads are ‘National Speed Limit’ but there are some villages to pass through on the way up the coastal stretch. However, the inland route takes in some long, straight roads with excellent visibility :eyebrows:.

At this point I would like to remind everyone though, the reasons behind this day – no more accidents would be preferable!

The Details

Overall the route is approximately 140 miles.

There are 2 initial meet-up points; one South of the Tyne and one North of the Tyne (see below). As a nice little bonus, those meeting in the South will get to drive through the Tyne tunnel – with windows down of course! [GRIN][/GRIN]

Rough itinerary is:

09.30 – 10.00am Meet at Durham Services (northbound A1, Jct 61)

10.30 – 11.00am ALL to Meet in ASDA car park (Whitley Road, Benton)

11.00am Depart onto indicated route and convoy as much as possible up to Bamburgh (eta 12’ish), meeting in the big car park on the left opposite the castle (you can’t miss it!)

Lunch – either bring some bait or go to a pub

2.00pm – Depart Bamburgh for drive home as per route.

3.30pm Onwards - meet at Keelman’s Lodge.

I’ve attached a link to Google Maps that shows the route.

You could also buy an OS Travel Map (Tour 14 – Northumberland) for only £4.99 (http://leisure.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/leisure/ItemDetails.jsp?item=os_touring_14)

Additionally, I hope to be scanning some map images that I shall upload onto here later this week.

Needless to say, there are some cracking spots for potential photos but its obviously up to you if wish to leave the group and catch up at Bamburgh or whatever….

Also, if the weather is good there are some good spots we can stop for Fish & Chips, Ice Cream etc...

For those from outside of the area that want to come and need somewhere to stay, please see attached word doc. with suggested accommodation. This is your responsibility to book!

Finally, please add your name to the list if you can make this so I can get a rough idea of numbers.

Was looking forward to doing this drive.

1. Wrong date for us as we are in Preston for a birthday party.

2. Was hoping the cruise would have started a bit further south so that more of us could have joined in in memory of Lewis. Maybe meeting at A1 M62 junction and travelling north.

Oh well, maybe next time. Make it a good one for Lewis!

No Sunday drive? :(

I think i'll be on nightshift that week, so the Saturday is a no go-er for me:(

If there's enough call for it, then the date can always be changed to the Sunday, though this would effect the night out in Newcastle too and maybe make things a bit more awkward for those travelling from a bit further afield...?

Yeah no bother Stevo, i wouldn't expect you to change it just for one person.

As said well done for sorting it out and making it a good memory for Lewis :)

Jurgen has mentioned he was going to organise a similar event for Darren, so now thinking of combining the two and choosing a different day.

If interested, keep watching for a revised date.

Cheers

James - haven't spoken to Jurgen yet as I though't I'd just let this roll and see how many takers we get for the 19th before deciding whether to shift the date to August.

Numbers are going up a bit now but still not as many as I'd hoped.

Will hang on a bit longer before making the decision to shift into August. Gonna a drop a few PMs to people as I'm not convinced all NE members are aware yet.

Did you take a trip to the bodyshop at the weekend - how its coming along?

Tom - fingers crossed mate!
