Scoboblio
Yesterday I removed the stock subwoofer, only to find it had been cut out of a cornflakes packet and glued to a huuuuuuge piece of heavy plastic Having taken it out, there's more than enough room for a half - decent install with a small 8" sub I keep hearing how Toyota were completely dedicated to reducing weight in the Supra.... so why go to all this trouble to put in a subwoofer that's complete rubbish? koolance
i never even knew there was a subwoofer in the car?!?! where isit lol
Scoboblio
I think it's only on GZ models, it's behind the rear seats, in the back of the boot. Look for a rectangular plastic grill.
Bobbeh
Looks like a mighty peice of equipment

Pete
First time I've seen one of those. None of my three Supras had one. It really is quite pants!
hadyn
did the UK/US specs get this weedy sub too?
Scoboblio
I love the way it's exactly the same as the standard front / rear speakers, just a slightly different shape! And while I'm here the same goes for the front speakers - why the huge plastic thingy for a small paper speaker? Surely there's a lighter way of doing it! letmeshowyou
don't put an install in - you know you'd rather smuggle alcohol in that gap!
Scoboblio
Hmmm, not a bad idea that!
VIL
Scoboblio, I was thinking of taking mine out and putting a proper `sub tube` in the gap. As a matter of interest before I start ripping things out do you know the dimensions of the gap you now have available? NB Was it easy to remove? any cables etc to worry about? Scoboblio
I'm not 100% sure on dimensions but I'll have a measure up soon From memory you've got about 8" width and about 4" depth but don't quote me on that until I've checked. My local ICE specialist says he'll be able to build a pretty decent install with a small sub, possibly 8" in the space. Won't be earth shattering, but that's not what I'm looking for. It was really easy; > Put the top half of the back seats down by pulling yer knob > Remove the carpet and board from the back of the boot > The carpet on the back of the seats is held in by 4 rawlplug type things, use a small screwdriver to push in the middle and pull them out > Remove carpet > Take out about 6 12mm bolts holding the sub enclosure in > Cut the wire on either side, there are a pair of wires in each insulator which will need re-connecting after you take the enclosure out > Remove the enclosure and marvel at it's uselessness > Put two bolts back in either side, you'll see the ones I mean
Jezz
Omg how gay. Mine's coming out tomorrow now!
Paul -C-
I couldn't believe how heavy that sub box was! But it must be there for a reason. Maybe to keep the frame stiff?
Scoboblio
I started to think that today, after removing it! I certainly hope it's not there to provide extra strength! But that would explain why it's got so many bolts in it......
VIL
`Sco` thanks for that, most useful. I would be very interested in the dimensions as I intend to do a twofold sub system and want to untilise this space. `Paul`, you have a very good point. I have also looked at this contraption in the past and debated should I or should I not take it out as I thought there may be some structural benefit to retaining it. It seem insane that Toyota with their attention to detail should make what looks like a real afterthought of a Sub (LOL) enclosure!
Ulrik
OKEY, is there one in the Euro Spec ? *Need to look this up..*
Scoboblio
It's easy enough to tell mate, just look in the boot.... right at the back of it, in the middle, near the rear seats there will be a retangular plastic box sticking up a few inches. I'm assuming that if you don't have a sub, you don't have this plastic box Then again if you have one it's next to useless anyway
Scoboblio
Here's an ideal pic.... the plastic rectangle in the middle of the pic just behind the seats is the covering for the stock sub; http://www.abydos.com/supra/interior/audio/stock_sub.JPG
VIL
`Sco` did you get a change to measure the space available? Cheers VIL
Scoboblio
Not yet, working double shifts right now, so got no time!
terribleturner
There's an online guide of how to make/install and 8" sub in the space. Think it's a US site.
Scoboblio
Right, aquired a tape measure and got the following rough measurements; the enclosure left behind is approx 28" wide, 8" long and 4 1/2" deep. You'll obviously want to double check this before building anything as it's not a neat shape, got bits of bodywork poking out of it
VIL
Thanks for the measurements Time to give it a go. I will have a look around to see if there is a post on the us site about using this space for a sub install. If I find anything I will post it into this thread.
