code 42 - speed sensor?

query on behalf of a mate, says his engine management light comes on when he boots the car at around 4k rpm and has come up as code 42 on diagnostic

any suggested fixes for this prob, is it serious? he says its ok after turning the car off and on

Is it an import?

if so , my money's on the SLD/Speedo converter........

I have the same code now as well. Is it OK to drive with this light coming on occasionally?

Mine did it for over 9 months until i bothered to look at getting it sorted.

Ah right well its going up to thors this month so hopefully it will all come out in the wash there.

It may not be the convertor, as there are 2 speed signal wires from the gear box, one goes to the gauge cluster which is the one that gets converted normally, and the other goes to the odo metre and in there is a buffer circuit which then comes out and goes to the ECU, Now i reckon that if you do the following it may cure it..

On the back of the odo plug you should see a blue/red wire and a pink wire, they are next to each other next to a brown wire in a row of three. Cut the pink wire about an inch from the plug and join it on to the blue/red wire

I had the same and it was the old Speedo converter/censor on the gearbox.

Ah the ODO converter wiring looked as dodgy as a dodgy thing when I took the dash out so its probably assosciatted to that then. I will look later

I will endeavour to do so if not has pete got a car lift?? I ask as this car is so sodding low I am having difficulty getting my trolley jack under it?

If by Pete you mean me then yes we have a two post lift and low profile jacks and wheel ramps to get the lowest cars on.

We got a Ferrari 360 Challenge car on at that's about 40mm off the floor.

If I get a restrictor ring before I come up and I cannot fit it myself beforehand is there any chance that it can be fitted at yours before it go's on test Pete?

My light now comes on as well. Before I go cutting the odo wires has any one else got any other ideas?

Right the thor delimiter and converter has now been fitted. When fitting I found one of the loverly solder joints the previous converter box had on it had disintegrated at the odo. Lo and behold the flashing O/D light and the engine management fault code 42 have both gone. I have also been able to calibrate out the massive speedo overeading. It was so far out that I had to adjust it maximum downwards. It still overeads a tad but its now within acceptable limits.

As an aside for those that said that the reason I had the flashing light was because I had disconnected the trac control switch, on my car that is not the case. Its now not flashing and the trac control switchs plugis still removed.

Is this really a good idea?

Does the odometer still work if you do this?

I have the dash apart right now for a refinish job and need to get my code 42 sorted. Also installing a TSD so I'll check the ECU for any strange wires.

Anybody else have a spare? I'm putting my dash back together and would like to sort this problem while I'm at it. There aren't any funny wires coming out of the ECU that would lead me to believe the car's ever been delimited. I haven't installed the TSD yet and have just taken apart the odometer unit. Any clues on what to look for that would show a bad odometer? The unit works fine.
