Scary handling!!!

Got this really scary kinda problem with the car. When going over bumps/potholes/cracks in the road the left rear of the car twiches like its gonna break away. The rest of the corners of the car are fine but everytime the left rear hits a bump.....twitches from side to side....and gets really scary in the wet.

I had Slowdog check everything icluding the arms, dogbone link, anti rollbar, bearing, bushes and the shocks but we couldnt find what was causing it. Strangely the handling is fine when im loading up the left rear but over bumps its feels like its gonna break loose!!!

Another possible symptom is a very slight squeaking sound over imperfections in the road again from the left rear, so im wondering if these 2 are related.

Ive had a good look myself and had it in the air with the wheels off the ground and yanked it up/down and side to side but doesnt seem to be any kind of play.

Has anyone ever had these symtoms before and found the possible cause??

Right, been out under the car with my trusted 2foot torque wrench and just about all the bolts etc where really really tight. i noticed at the left rear, as you are looking at the LR tyre from the back of the car that it is wearing more just to the right of the centre groove than it has on the inner edge. Normally this would indicate an overinflated tyre but the pressures are correct so whatever the problem is, it is also causing the tyre to wear unevenly near the centre?!!

Just a quick update. The problem with the left rear getting twitchy over bumps has been getting gradually worse, so armed with my aunt in the driver seat, she proceeded to drive over some of the bumpiest roads round here with my head stuck out the passenger window observing the LR wheel over bumps and looking like a complete muppet!!!

Other than tyre deflection i couldnt see the wheel actually moving in any strange direction other than up or down. but you can still feel the rear end wobbling around over bumps. Ive checked and re-checked all the nuts/bolts bushes and suspension joints and they all seem tight and play-free. Like my previous post something is casuing the tyre to also wear just inside the middle groove. Also noticed the front shockes quite squeaky over bumps....time for coilovers soon too.

Would a badly worn rear shock(s) cause the rear to feel so loose over bumps? Or even the tyre??

It rained yesterday and it really kicked out hard when i was travelling over the slightest bump at over 20mph?!!!

I have similar problems with the passenger side rear - went to see Paul K today and he suggested it could be the top mounts (which seems reasonable enough). Will get these checked/changed asap and hopefully that'll solve it!

Have you had those checked on yours yet?

BTW: You already have coil-overs, all supras do ;)

Guest slow dog

top mounts bang and knock when you go over a bump they would not cause you

to sway from lane to lane as yours does cosmic your problem is from the rear not the front you need to start looking over all your bushes to start with

Has it got none standard dampers on it? Take off the LHR damper and spring, remove the spring and see if the damper is dead. Rear top wishbone inner spherical bearings play up a lot through wear, can be hard to find unless you know how to articulate it.

Chris, i believe they are the original/standard dampers/springs as fitted to the car from the factory. If i take the spring/damper apart what will be the symptoms of a dead damper?

Also how would i check the spherical bearings??

I know mate, it felt really weird that day when you drove it but has gradually got worse. ive checked every bush etc including the dog bone you suggested but there is no play in it :(

If it is the dampers...would make a great set of drift suspension...LOL :eyebrows:

I have this problem as well. Car tracks funny from behind. I think I may have multiple problems. In the wet and over painted surfaces, the rear end jumps a little to one side then seems to grab and get back in place. Man, one more thing to check. I'm gonna' have to put the Supra up on the lift and give it 3-4 hours of love. Thanks for the intel all.

Took my rear suspension apart, both bone dry but found 10mm undamped play in the NS shock on compression. Replaced shocks and rear unpredicability vanished.

are your back tyres both the same with same tread/my old wheels did this, with new wheels and tyres no problem

Yes mate both the same tyres but the left rear is wearing quite badly in the just on the inside of the centre groove.

I have been following this thread as its a topic close to my heart.

I have the exact same problem.

Car "wiggling"

I tightened all the sub-frame bolts today, and it made absolutely no difference.

If anything it made the "wiggle" a little more pronounced.

I had the dampers checked and was told they are fine.

Some j-specs (97 on I think) have REAS suspension. Red dampers with a little hose coming out of the bottom.

If anyone has any more info on this I would be greatful

I also have a few other avenues left to explore still as suggested by Chris W.

Bushes and control arms need a look.

John
