suprarob
small question how do you loosen the fan belt tensioner to change the belt I,ve looked at the manual resorce page on the us site and it looks like a ring spanner is used. what size would it be ? thanks
Rob
Spanner, socket, whatever, just lean on it and it moves down enough to remove the belt. You are only moving it, not undoing it, it's just a stiff spring.
dude
Its 14mm and you wont move it with a spanner , id recomend something like the large 'breaker' bar tha Halfords sell for £20 , thatl be good for undoing your wheel nuts as well Dude:flame Dev
suprarob
thanks guy,s I,ll try both ideas later although I did have a half harted attempt at moveing it by hand a few days ago, and it wouldn,t move cheers
Chris Wilson
Hmm, had 3 Supras in now where the 24 mm spanner size bolt was sheared by using a socket / spanner on it to take the tension off the belt. I have made up a 2 pronged tool to move the arm, rather than use the bolt to deflect against the spring pressure. Saves the worry of something shearing! Ian C
I just stuck a ratchet handle between the two prongs it's got on it and used that as a lever - didn't go anywhere near a bolt. -Ian

I take it you mean 14mm bolt head chris !!!, mine hasnt sheared it has stripped the threads so your method may be better but Mr Toyota defo wanted it to be turned with a socket and bar . Ian C
I may have missed something obvious here but whats wrong with the attached pic? (Artistic it is too) yellow line = ratchet handle. No risk of mangling a bolt. -Ian
dude
nothing wrong but it only applies if you have a manual !!!!! Dude:flame Dev
Ian C
I was unaware there was a difference in tensioners between auto and manual - got a piccy of the auto one? -Ian

Ian C
That's bizarre, I can't work out why they needed to be so different. -Ian

Chris Wilson
Do manuals and autos run the same sized cooling fan? I can't say i have ever noticed much if any diffrence myself though. I am also fairly sure i have seen manuals with the none "pronged" tensioner assembly...
dude
Same fan CW , the manual tensioner has a small damper on the bottom and is a lot more bulky than the auto one !! Dude:flame Dev

Dude:flame Dev Ahh! Got it. The manual transmission cars, given misuse of the clutch and / or gearbox, can put quite fierce torque reversals through the engine. These shock loads can "bump" the belt, which, being very long, and driving lots of high inertia things, into a loose loop, maybe even make it come off. the auto wouldn't allow this. maybe in testing Toyota found this a potential problem and used a hydraulically damped tensioner on the manual transmission cars? in facy I'd put money on it, that's why they are different. I'd give myself a cigar, but I've stopped *&@#~ing smoking.....

Have you, that must be quite a difficult thing to do, especially when you think of those first few puffs from lighting up a big cigar, that luscious, almost velvety clouds, that heady aroma. It's a most decadent luxury I'm sure you can do it though.
