Kirk
Ive been snooping around on supraforums when i stumbled across this thread http://www.supraforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=568719 which links to this page http://www.bulletcylinderheads.com.au/billetblocks.php quite an interesting concept. Granted they would not be cheap and seem pretty pointless as our blocks are pretty dam strong but the weight saving would be fairly large. Thorin
Very interesting, but yeah pretty pointless just to save weight... but as people have already pointed out over on SF, if this is available with bigger bore sizes, then this is extremely interesting indeed IMO
Wez
There was a company at Autosport that does the same thing, they take a standard block and then machine one out of a billet, from what I remember it wasnt cheap but they had some work there that looked very impressive

Thorin
from what I remember it wasn't cheap Someone posted $11,000 on the SF thread, I don't think that's too bad.
Kirk
isnt that actualy less than a hks stroker if larger bores were possible without compromising strength then it could become a popular choice. A better flowing designed head would also be a nice addition with this sort of setup Edited December 1, 2009 by Kirk (see edit history)
Chris Wilson
No way will a billet block be as light as a good modern casting in similar material.
Thorin
No way will a billet block be as light as a good modern casting in similar material. Gotta be lighter than the stock block though surely?
Chris Wilson
Difficult comparison, these are almost certainly designed with drag racing in mind, and as such cooling issues are possibly not fully addressed. I'd want to see one do a few 20 lap circuit races. Also, straight six blocks are long and narrow, and suffer a potential lack or torsional rigidity. Make a block designed to be made in cast iron out of a billet of aluminium alloy and you are going to have to introduce a LOT of additional material to keep that original rigidity. It may have very little weight difference once the waterway issues and strength has been addressed. In the case of these I suspect both these issues are secondary to weight, but they are fairly BASIC issues
