Changing the Aux belt tensioner

flukey-lukey

Recommended Posts

So, I'm guessing this is a difficult job as the bolts are underneath the black plastic on the engine. And looks like the crank pully has to come off too???

Any info or step by step guides out there?

I have a new tensioner and thought it would be possible to just swap the pully (the bearing has gone and this would cure it) but it seems they are slightly different in style and it doesn't sit properly :(

Aux belt - are we talking the belt i know as the Aux belt ie the one that loops round the aircon/alternator etc?

if yes the Crank pulley does NOT require removal.

May need pics of the tensioner to help completely. Is your car a manual or auto?

Yes thats the one I'm talking about :)

My car is auto TT 94.

The tensioner that is on the car now has a round metal plate at the front just before the bolt. The new one has round plates at the front and back. These plates seem to sit on the bearing so the wheel can spin freely. My plan was to just swap the pullys (the bit with the bearing in) but now I know thats not possible I need to swap the entire thing which is held on by 3 bolts.

But I'm unsure where the start and which bits to actually take off :search:

Ibbars one is the same as the one on the spare engine i have in the garage, the one in my previous pic is metal?

Not sure on why they are different..........

Anyhow i think that if you just remove the plastic camcovers (a few allen key bolts - one recessed just above the tensioner) you can remove and refit the tensioner (from memory x2 12mm and x1 13mm?)

If you like i could do mine tomorrow and take a picture or two....

Someone please correct me if I am wrong but are you sure that you have the correct tensioner. The one pictured in Ibrars post (the pulley on the left with the plastic wheel) looks like the pulley for the 6 speed (minus the shock absorber). They have the plastic wheel on it, the one next to it is the Auto pulley (minus the wheel) you can see the spring mechanism on the front of it. That also backs up my first thought on the one pictured with the plastic wheel as it does not have the spring mechanism.

Of course I could be completely wrong in which case I will go crawl back under my rock. :)

Thanks for your help scooter, you just confirmed what I was thinking about the cam cover being held on with allen key bolts. I'll have another look tomorrow if the wind dies down :)

Someone else has mentioned this to me. Does it not do the same job overall?

I can't see the difference (from just looking at it) apart from the fact the new one has a plate at each side of the wheel and mine just has one at the front

I'm sure Nic the Pimp or CW will have a copy of the manual in PDF IIRC. Sure I saw it before from Nic anyway. :)

I usually find it easier to work with a hard copy of what I'm doing. I stare at a screen all day most days anyway. I got my manual from JohnK on here if you're interested

They are different mate, I am not sure if the 6 speed version has the built in spring or not.

I just had a auto to manual conversion on mine and I could not use a brand new auto belt tensioner that I had just purchased a month before the conversion as they were different, it was not just a case of being able to bolt up the shock from the 6 speed version and doing it that way. That would lead me to believe that they are in fact different internally

Here is a picture of the auto tensioner that I recently sold.
