Air conditioning problem

Just when you need it, my air conditioning is not blowing cold air. Looked in the little glass viewer and cannot see anything happening. Pipes are not cold near oil filter. Cannot hear the pump switching on and off like on my wifes Ford. Before I send it in for a re-gas, could it be anything else. Are there any tests I can perform. Toyota want £146 to re-gas......anyone know any cheaper (Manchester area). What kind of gas is in a 94 UK TT.......Quick I'm cooking

I can't stress this enough........try to find an AIR-CONDITIONING SPECIALIST.  My uncle works for one round here, and he's been telling me some real horror stories about how dealers 'service' their air-conditioning units (which nine times out of ten are subcontracted to specialists for installation anyway!).

 

I'm sure they'll be one around Manchester.

There are diagnostic routines for all Supras but I don't know them 100%, you have to watch flashing lamps (the Soarer actually displays numbers 42 etc) Most Toyotas use the following start sequence for the OBD (On-Board Diagnostics).

Press the AUTO and RECIRC buttons in, turn the ignition to on, all the Aircon lights go on, then after a few moments they will start to flash, there may even be a 'buzz' these flashes or buzzes are a series of code numbers, a sort of crude morse code. The guys here can confirm this I'm sure, there are just 14 separate codes, they are;

They all mean different things, and you can have a few of them so write down all the flashing and watch for the pattern repeating so you can see the entire loop. (eg 11,32,43. repeated endlessly)

If you do this, post the numbers here and you will know what you are up against.

DO NOT do this in a dark place, it is sunny today so do this outside, this is because code 21 is the solar sensor diode and that will show as faulted, in a garage

Couldn't agree more Flip.  Very few main dealers or garages are able to service Air Con systems.  Some are up front and will tell you so and may even recommend a specialist firm, others will not.  My mate gets loads of work from local car dealers, he is a Specialist Air con engineer.

 

I think all MKIV's use R32A in the system. Should be printed on your under bonnet sticker.

 

Remember Air con systems need to be used regularly to keep them in tiptop condition.  I try to use mine every day I use the car.

Tried it and it works, but what does it all mean?

Anyone got the  codes?

All fixed boys and girls. I took your advice and found a aircon specialist near to where I live. Full test, oil, gas (154A) sucked out, vacuum dried, refilled to correct level......all while I waited and watched and asked a thousand questions......£68 for cash......can now make my own ice cream, whilst driving...cheers

The glass viewer is located at the front near the radiator, along side a little grey cap.

 

If you run the car at about 2000 rpm with the air con set to lowest temp and fan on full you may see little bubbles in the glass. These should clear after 30 seconds so that all you see is clear fluid.

 

If you see bubbles continuously or no fluid, you need to get it checked.
