Alternator problems post N/A-TT conversion, advice pleeeez!

Hi guys,

Right, long story short.

Quite a few months ago now, as some may remember, I took my N/A to Silverstone for Jezz and his crew to breathe on it and make it go fast fast fast!!:D

Very soon after I had an intermittent problem with 3 warning lights coming on (battery, cat temp and oil level). and towards the end total loss of power, as in the car would die even when it was running. This turned out to be a farked alternator. I purchased a used one from Jezz/Steve at Silverstone and this solved the problem entirely and its been fine ever since.

Last night, I started her up and the same three lights are on, and after 5mins of ticking over she died and wouldn't start again, as in turn key and absolutely nothing. After a night of charging she starts fine. I put a multimeter on the battery and got 12.6v with the car not running, but 12.2v when running! This should be higher when it's running shouldn't it? If the alt was working then shouldn't it be more so that the battery was getting charged?

So my questions are:-

1. Am I correct in thinking that the alternator I got off Jezz is now knackered?

2. How much would a brand new one cost me from Mr T?

3. Is there any underlying fault that could cause these alternators to blow? Like a bad earth or something??

Cheers in advance everybody.

while running it should be just above 14 volt (14- 14,5)

have you checked the 120 a alternator fuse?

Thought so, the 120 alt fuse is fine as everything else is working (I've managed to blow this fuse before with some drunken spanner wrangling and it knocked the whole car out!:D)

Cheers for the voltage advice though, confirmed what I was thinking. Alt has gone the way of the dodo!!

Anybody with any idea as to how much a new 'un will cost??

I think a new one is something outrageous like 300 quid. Is th engine losing coolant? If the drain hose is not present on the water pump seal leakage stub, and the pump is tired, it can leak into the alternator, and they don't like that at all...A faulty battery or battery connection, or alternator connection can kill them, too.

Oooooo I bloody hope not!! Coolant is fine, alt is dry as a bone and I think its just that it was a duff 'un. I hope.

Connections to it are also fine, as far as I can tell any way. The battery is brand new or near enough. Its had a bit of a rough time though with being run down more than eight times due to the last two alternators but that shouldn't affect it that much. should it?!

300 shmakeroos!!! no no no no!!!!:(
