Scooter
PAS was noisy on start up a couple of times recently, checked the fliud and it was low, topped up and all was fine, but not for long (x1 month 1k miles). Refilled twice now since first problem (from below min (cold level) to hot level. i don't think this is normal (is it?) could it be the pump on its way out? No sign of any leaks btw. (possible mix of fluids in the system, should i get it flushed and refilled?)
AJI
PAS fluid consumption should be zero. I would have it checked out A.S.A.P. , sounds like you have a leak somewhere.
Scooter
cheers AJI, I didn't think it was normal, will check thoroughly for a leak, no obvious signs but it must be going somewhere!
Digsy
I once had a leak on the PAS system on my BMW 3 series. The fluid was slowly leakingout of the rack, behind the gaitors at the ends. No external signs at all.
Scooter
When i said no sign of leaks that was me just checking the engine bay area (Doh), so i will extend my search cheers.......
Chris Wilson
Agree with Darren, unlike the auto box fluid, which can get into the engine coolant, the PAS fluid must be leaking externally unless trapped in the rack gaiters, give `em a squeeze. If one or both have fluid in them the racks buggered. EXPENSIVE... But i may be able to help you out...
Nathan
Get underneath the car and have a look. I was losing fluid on my UK car, 60K miles and found that one of the plastic-coated metal pipes from the rack to the pump was leaking. It was for no other reason than the pipe had corroded underneath the plastic sheath. Would've been a better idea to not sheathe them at all IMO because all it does is keep the water IN!! A few minutes removing it, brazing it up and topping up fluid meant problem solved. I've yet to see a leaky rack yet so fingers crossed. Cheers, Nathan TDI PLC
Scooter
Cheers Chris and Nathan. I had a look last night and it appears to be leaking as you (Nathan) describe. There is quite a bit of fluid in the non intercooler side front bumper pod. The sheathe comment rings a bell too as recently I had an oil leak and whilst tracking down the source of this (oil pressure sensor) I noticed the pipe with sheathing you describe, and fluid must have been leaking from here then but I just assumed it was all oil. Not sure it'll take ME a few minutes but at least I know (hopefully) the extent of the problem..... thanks again
