Which Intercooler?

Looks like I'll have to replace the stock SMIC soon, it doesn't appear to be in that good a condition.:(

I've done loads of searches on here and other places but I'm no further forward.

I'm running at BPU, maybe a little extra would be nice but I'm not going to go single.

From what I've read I could go for:

CW SMIC £632.50

GReddy V-SPL 2-Row £530

HKS S-Type £565

HKS R-Type £975

Blitz LM V-Spec or something?

Is it possible to keep the stock airbox with these FMIC's, I've got the stock front bumper aswell.

I know the CW SMIC will do the job, but some must be better than others- more efficient, better flow rate etc, I'm not bothered about bling as it'll be hidden behind the meshed bumper .

Thanks in advance.:)

Did you get those prices off the group buy thread I was organising? If so they are normally quite a lot more than that elsewhere. Drp me a PM if you need a good deal on an IC.

I did get the prices from your group buy.

I'll definately give you a PM, just cannot decide which to go for! :)

go for the Chris Wilson smic

if you have an active front spoiler the front mount ones will get in the way of this working

Chris wilson smic are very good quality and are a straight swop

easy fit

you don,t need a front mount at bpu

if you have standard front bumper there are also issues with proper air flow through the intercooler

How do I know it's any good? :D

After doing many searches I cannot find anything conclusive to say why one is better than another!

Am going to put it on my car after std dyno to check what the effect is...

But until then (prob 3 weeks after first and second dynos/fitting etc...you dont. However if you are not 100% satisfied mine comes with a guarantee and no hassle with returns etc etc

Guest Terry S

I would say the Greddy 2 row of maybe the Blitz as the stock Rad seems to work OK with these. Much thicker and I can see cooling being an issue on stock rad( my old car needed a fluidyne with the HKS R type). I run the Blitz on my car and its seems fine with good charge temps. I have yet to see charge temp results on the others ( I have also tested the GReddy 3 Row and HKS R type which are very good) and I would have thought that was an important selling point.

I have a blitz intercooler and a stock front bumper and airbox, it fits with a bit of trimming of the front bumper just below the drivers side indicator. Just so the pipework can go through.

The only thing i find is that half of the intercooler is covered by the bumper due to the size of the intercooler and the small opening on the bumper so if i was in the market i would go for a SMIC unless i had a large apertured front bumper.

True, don't want to fit a different front bumper.

The intake for the SMIC isn't that big at all, but it does have the adavantage of having an unrestricted exit. .

Having the radiator and engine behind a FMIC isn't helpful to air flow.

It would be nice to know how a FMIC with a stock bumper would compare to a CW SMIC.

I have 3 left in stock, and maybe won't be doing any more, as I have to do a minimum order of 10 next time, and I don't fancy tying so much money up! So if anyone wants one speak up pretty soon, as I fitted one of the 4 left today, and have 2 possibles for a couple of the others. Not doing a hard sell, just telling as it is.

The way I see it, the CW smic is insurance-friendly, active-spoiler-friendly and front rad-friendly. Front ducting-friendly as well.

Pricey, yes, but doesn't upset anything around it.

FMICs need to relocate this and that, right bodges IMO if you want to keep the car standard(ish).

I wish Chris could get them done for (significantly) less, then we could have a large group buy and I'd be top of the list. Sadly, it doesn't look like it's gonna happen though...:(

If Mr T is charging £875+vat for a new stock SMIC, is CW's really that pricey at £610 ? (A saving ov £418.12)

Not in my book and seem very good VFM from someone we trust!!!
