Elliot
I saw that around a week ago, and promised myself I'd go and buy an extinguisher for the car. Still haven't

Scoboblio
Terrible Me and a friend once saw a Vauxhall Cavalier going up in flames on a nearly deserted carriageway... someone must have set fire to it about a minute before we drove past it and saw the first flames (it was dark). Damn they go up really fast That was scary... as it went up we had no idea if anyone was inside
Kopite
i was drivin behind a flat bed van at night on the M62 a couple of weeks ago, i was in the inside lane and he was in the middle lane. thought i saw some smoke but then i thought "surely not". soon enough, saw a flame on the back of the van!! stormed up behind him flashin my lights like crazy, takes a while for him to react but he slams on his brakes! (then i realised i better stop flashin and brake as well!) the bad thing for him was it was in a 50 zone with road works so he didnt know whether just to stop on the road of keep going until the hard shoulder was back! he chose the latter, i followed at a distance but all was well and he pulled over and bailed out and called the fire brigade! scary moment for him i think, no idea what he was hauling! also made me think "shit i best get a fire extinguisher"
terribleturner
Jesus that went up fast. Think i may be popping down Halfrauds tomorrow.
RobSheffield
for that to be effectively stopped you would need a plumbed in extinguisher. you could see the guy trying to stop it with a Halfrauds type extinguisher, and all the good it did him. food for thought... TLicense
agreed Rob, I went on a fire marshal course at work a few years back, and we learnt that basically if there's a fire that's in anything more than a waste paper bin, don't even bother with a fire extinguisher (I'm talking the big old office type extinguishers here) as they won't be man enough to put it out. So I can only imagine how much use one of those diddy little things is going to be. Might as well piss on it for all the use they are. ewizzy
While I agree that it must have been heartbreaking to see his car go up like that.....Ive got to say, It would have been MUCH more heartbreaking if it was ANYTHING other than a MKiV golf!
RobSheffield
Yeah Tony, not sufficient capacity i would say, but not only that, the fire on this golf was deep in the engine bay, and you wouldnt be able to get enough water in there. one of those plumbed in ones would be good....can you arrange a group buy with your 'contacts'

Poor bloke, it is heart breaking to watch your car go up like that.... I know of more than one fires started on those, caused by fuel leak due to a botched fitting of an adjustable FPR by 'Regal Autosport' I only found out the botch on mine when I took the head off. Scary....
_Cav_
Is horrible to see your car go up! When i was about 14, my brother had my dads car (Lotus Sunbem TI) for a week while he was in spain. the carbs had just been replaced (£200) and should last a year with road use. So roll on my dad coming home and he jumps in the car and there was a knocking...not happy my bro had knackered them in a week, so can only think how hard he was driving it! So my dad orders him to take it to the garage to get it fixed and pay for it.. but on the way there the engine mount breaks and falls off, engine drops cutting the fuel pipe, (as we were going through an S bend) brother pumps it... then BOOM fire blows the bonnet up, i dive out, go round to drag my bro out (with no hair now!). fire hit the fuse box, all of the 8 lights on the front start flashin! hense to say when my dad turns up he's a bit pissed! paulfurn
Thats not a good thing to watch at all. I really feel for the poor lad who lost his car and had to watch it go up in flames like that. I actually felt sick for him. The mad thing is that when it started it looked inconspicous, and I certainly didnt think it would turn into the carnage that it did.
JohnA
inconspicous, ... Looked like fuel fire to me, it can only get worse considering the fuel pressures involved.

Scary.... hmmmm never heard good things about them when i was a migger. i think mine was a standard fpr. the fire seemed to come from the 4x4 accumulator area, maybe fuel pipe, ill never know. JohnA
There is no fuel pipe around there though. But all fuel pipes deteriorate rather quickly, I discovered one under the car had rusted through and was squirting fuel a couple of feet across, straight onto the exhaust. Noice. Mine was a late model, as well. Poor build quality made me say 'enuff ez enuff' when I realised that the ECU looms only live 10years before needing rewiring....
