Lewis
I asked this question before and the main response was too expensive. Now, after watching the monster garage from across the atlantic..... What is to stop you putting a transfer box in and a second prop? Is there a technical reason why it can't be done on the supra but can be done on other vehicles? Getting a custom-made prop wouldn't be very expensive and then it's just a case of finding the right transfer box is it not? Or have I totally missed the point? eyefi
top secret have done it, they discribed it as very difficult
Lewis
Only took 4 minutes on monster garage to turn a firebird 2wd into 4wd - that'll learn me for watching discovery Oh and 1.5 minutes of that was advert - so I want it dont just as quick
Digsy
The hardest bit would proably be sticking a driveshaft through the oil pan and packaging the transfer box / propshaft. I wouldn't confuse things like Monster Garage with anything approaching a proper engineering job.
eyefi
darren, cool avatar. why huey and not duey? i can remember watching silent running when i was a kid and crying when he ran one of them over, painful memory iirc the top secret conversion was a skyline drivetrain and engine. Lol - I know - I was being sarcastic But they fact they did it suggests it isn't out of the realms of possibility, there are just vehicle differences that may make it harder. Syed Shah
Nothing is ever out of the realm of possibility, however it IS out of the realms of affordability. An old member here looked into it and deemed it near impossible, requiring major changes to be made, for the few benefits, it is not worth it. It only helps straight-line traction anyway. 400BHP
In order to make the supra into a 4wd you would need to somehow add a transfer case to the end of the gearbox, then run a prop to a differential that would need to be mounted between the front wheels, I would think this would necessitate the removal and modification of the sump (dry sump? ), the crossmember, the suspension legs and the wheel hubs, I would say this is a bloody hard job. When certain tuners/individuals made Escort Vans or Mk2 escorts into 4WD cossies, they grafted the entire floorpan of a 4WD onto the shell, its obviously a great deal easier! Whos going to try and frankenstein a skyline chassis onto a supra shell then??
Lewis
Thanks 400hp, thats the kind of answer I was after, makes it much easier to understand why it is out of scope so to speak. Ta

I cried at that And didn't another one get thrown off into space during an asteroid storm or something? The other two found his foot while out wandering the hull a few days later... thread gone off topic I admit...
Digsy
Anyone who doesn't cry at the end of Silent Running has no soul.  Ian C has it on DVD. Anyway, back to 4WD Supras...

Ian C
Making a Supra 4wd would be a heartbreaking exercise of futility, disappointment, and emotional turmoil. So I think Silent Running is on-topic 100%. I'm wondering if I'll ever watch it again -Ian

dangerous brain
If you could stick a nuked up 500 bhp 4wd system including engine from say a porsche or a skyline then yes I reckon you would see some advantage. I reckon an engine system behind the driver would make the supe a serious straight line but more importantly circuit capable motor. Its got a good long wheel base and is as wide as a truck with plenty of rubber front and back. Its as aerodynamic as most supercars so would be a formidable machine. How much of the supe would be left however is very dubious lol.
Need4Speed
If I wanted to make a 4WD Supra, I'd put the engine where the passenger seat is and that would make the transmission easy. In fact, I've got a few days spare - I'll try it.
