Changing sump gasket & rocker gasket

Recommended Posts

My car is N/A Auto.

I want to change the sump gasket and rockercover gasket and I have read that the sump gasket is actually a paste that you buy and apply am I right? If so, I take it I can nip to toyota tomorrorw to get some or can I get it anywhere? Also is it hard to do? I dont really work on cars but have basic knowledge on servicing thats about as far as I go usually.

I want to do my rockercover gasket too, by the looks of it its pretty much the same work involved to change sparks plugs. Is that an easy job if is there a guide out there? and is it best to get that from toyota? I want to try and get the parts before tuesday if possible.

The trouble you'l have with the sump is actually getting the thing off. You have to either lift the engine or drop the sub-frame. Neither particularly easy!

Yes the sump gasket is basically an RTV sealant. Toyota sell a tube for about £45, or you can probably pick up some similar stuff from Halfords for about a tenner.

The camcover gaskets, you'll need to get from Toyota, and if you can change the spark plugs, is about a dozen bolts more and the camcovers will be off in your hands.

The sump gasket is easy enough fella, Process for doing this is as follows.

car up on axle stands or ramp.

Drain the oil.

You will need to remove the sub frame braces, 1 on each side.

Support the engine from above. Use a engine hoist or a engine support, you can rent these items.

Now locate the sub frame. Remove the bolts for the engine mounts.

Remove the bolts for the subframe.

Remove the subframe.

You can now get at the sump.

The sump splits in two, once the first part is off, you will have a plate to remove and then you will see the bolts that hold the second piece to the block.

are you sure the sump is actually leaking and it's not just stuff running down from above?

If it is leaking is it just from the lower black painted part? as i believe this bit can be resealed without any of subframe/engine supporting business.........

Personally I'd do the cam covers and have a real good clean up below and then see how that goes..........
