CJ
I am coming back to the UK on Friday and decided to hire a car from Gatwick airport for the 16 days. I ordered and paid online but have just printed out the terms and conditions and now see that they require a credit card imprint to cover damages etc. That's all fine and dandy but I no longer have a credit card. Since moving out here, I only ever use a bank debit card and they wont accept that. Rant over!
ivan
So are they refunding you Col? We used to take CC imprints too for the exact same reason but were flexible if the customer didn't have one.

TBH, I cannot see how the wont refund as the CC rule was not shown on the booking form nor the web site and only came to light after I looked at the terms and conditions which are sent after they take the booking and money. I am more pissed off by the fact that I now have to get from Gatwick to Wales on a Friday afternoon and then beg / borrow a car for the duration of the visit. I had the same problem a while back as i dont have a credit card either, couldnt even use my mums as the card holder had to be present, makes the whole ordeal very unappealing and difficult

I have a spare SAAB Turbo for the xmas period and in the spirit of good will you can use this over your break, it has Tax and MOT, you would just need to sort out insurance, it is in Purfleet in Essex, was going on Ebay tonight but could hold off if it helps you? My friend, that could be a lifesaver! Let me get hold of the hire people to find out if they definitely wont let me use my Debit card and then I can come back str8 away. How could we sort insurance? Is the car insured already? If so, can i be put onto the insurance (at my expense obviously). If not, any idea of any companies who will insure for a limited period i.e. 16 days? I have just closed the policy and it runs out 31st Dec, there are a few companies that do short term policies, not great value but if it gives you some wheels ?? http://tempcover.com/default.aspx?src=google This company quoted £77 for 16 days cover

CJ
OK, car hire definitely a no-go as they need a CC. They have offered (bloody good eh?) a refund minus £25 admin fee . I am now trying to find insurance Co's that will do 16 day policies to run from the 14th until the 30th. Be back ASAP.

CJ
Thats great "We've done fuck-all to help you and we'll charge you £25 for that privilege!" Yep - and when I pointed out that the terms and conditions are not shown until after you book he said, "but there is a link on the site that says "essential reading" - which there is, but in a point size that I could not see! CJ
I am going off line until about 10pm now, but the offer still stands Sent a PM back Dean but it looks as if it could be a no-go.
CJ
I am posting the copy of the PM sent to Dean to show why it was going to be a no-go and to publicly thank him for a superbly generous offer. Hiya Dean Well, despite my (and your) best efforts, it looks as if i might be scuppered in trying to borrow your car. The problem is not to do with insurance (that is the easy part) but more to do with collection and delivering it back. I fly in on Friday 14th and land at about 14.45. I am then meeting Robert (off the forum) to pick up a Wii that I bought off him. I would then get a train to Purfleet from Gatwick and the only ones available run something like: GATWICK AIRPORT 16:11 LONDON BLACKFRIARS 16:53 Tube* LONDON FENCHURCH STREET 17:26 PURFLEET 17:54 The connection between Blackfriars and Fenchurch being very tight too! But, that's not the hardest part I fly back on the morning of the 30th at 06.40 which means I need to be there at 04.40. Now, allowing for dropping the car back at Purfleet, I have checked the train times and the last one leaves Purfleet at something like: PURFLEET 22:53 LONDON FENCHURCH STREET 23:26 Tube* LONDON VICTORIA 00:30 00:30 GATWICK EXPRESS GATWICK AIRPORT 01:20 Again with very tight connection times to the Gatwick Express and with me humping about cases etc. I have just spoken to my ex wife and she is happy for me to borrow one of the family cars so that has helped and I now only have to organise the travel from Gatwick to Wales and back. So, to sum up, thank you very very much for your incredibly generous offer but on this occasion, I think I have to decline. Col
