Havard
It's unfounded because proof denies belief, and I'm not about to prove to anyone that I am God and disappear in a puff of logic That would ruin the belief for so many!! You aren't Father Christmas too are you..... This thread is a bit deep for me. I'm off back to post whoring and generally taking the p!ss.... H. Digsy
The people debating the probability of contactable, inteligent life existing elsewhere in our galaxy should look up and check out the Drake equation. The results appear to vary from an original 5000 potential civilisations to only 2, based on more recent data on actual planetary discoveries, but if we are talking about beings with the ability to contact us, doesn't it sound reasonable that they would do so? Or at least have a poke around. I used to believe almost everything I read about UFOs. These days I'm a lot more sceptical, but looking up at thenight sky I find it impossible to believe we are all alone, based on nothing more than probability. colsoop
There must be life out there in the universe. Perhaps not in the same way we view it. I can't believe that the wonder of life can not evolve under different conditions to ours somewhere else.

tbourner
Some people say it's a miracle that we got the planet in the right solar orbital position, and the right size, and the pole tipped over to give our seasons and weather, and a moon for tides etc. I say it's the opposite - utterly inevitable. True, if the universe is truly infinite, then there MUST be an infinite number of planets that support life similar to our own. Even if it's not inifinite and there are only trillions of stars, and the chance of a star having planets around it is a million to one, and the chance of a planet being able to support life is a million to one, and the chance that a life supporting planet supports life similar to our own is a million to one, there'd still be millions of them!!!! Either way, any species that is like us would almost CERTAINLY just observe a new planet before landing and meeting the locals, the same as going to unknown places on Earth, we check it out and don't just walk up to the local apes and try to communicate! Rob
It wasn't the credibility I was defending. It was this statement: "It's certainly been written before how more and more people drop organised faiths and shift to believing in crazy unfounded stuff like crystals, crop circles, UFOs, astrology, new world order or Islam". The above suggested Islam was not an organised faith and was part of "crazy unfounded stuff" whereas other mainstream religions were not. Guys, I need some help landing this one, it's a biggun. Honestly, sometimes you don't even need to bait the hook much.
Rob
Who's to say that believing in the prinicples of Islam (or Christianity, or Hinduism, or Pastafarian, etc. etc.) isn't any more credible than believing that crystals have the power to "heal" you though? Was that founded by Haile Spaghetti?

Matt H
Ive read that there is another planet that can been seen thorugh the most powerful telescope that scientists reckon has the same make up as earth but much much larger. We dont have the technology to see any further to perhaps see any life forms etc but at least we have someone where to go when we have finished making a mess of this planet Peronally, other than less advanced life forms i cant see there being anything on that planet, otherwise we would be able to notice something like a bomb going off etc. But i wouldnt mind finding a pet like a hamster that wasnt nocturnel, roll on the better telescopes
Rob
Spagnostics, that's great. I've been having a right old time on Wiki just now, I never even knew about the Protocols of Zion, god bless edumacashun.
Thorin
Who's to say there aren't more "universes" out there anyway? I'm not talking about alternate dimensions either, we know our perceived "universe" is a finite size expanding into (as far as we know infinite) nothingness, but who's to say there isn't a humongous gap of empty space and then another "universe" that's so far away we can't possibly detect it. Is space really infinite? How is that possible? If space isn't infinate, then what is outside it? And how would that be possible?!
Matt H
there isn't a humongous gap of empty space what do you think space is then?! Full of air?
Thorin
what do you think space is then?! Full of air? Well our "universe" is made up mostly of dark matter (edit: and "dark energy"), outside of our universe there's... well nothing.
Blackie
basic comment, we are here, why cant there but the same else where but maybe loads more advanced
Thorin
basic comment, we are here, why cant there but the same else where but maybe loads more advanced but if there is, where is the proof? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_Paradox
Matt H
Well our "universe" is made up mostly of dark matter, outside of our universe there's... well nothing. Thats not a fact, its a theory made up to put some reason behind mass calculations. Do you think therefore that if you travel far enough you will hit a wall?
Blackie
but if there is, where is the proof? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi_Paradox they could be a dam sight smarter than us and can cover it easier, when i get back from work later i will post up some of the things my boss has told me
R Black
Im not really a believer of UFO's. I dont see why we would be contacted as to travel the stars they would probably percieve us ants. Probability is there are lots of life many much more advanced than ourselves, also the life deep in our oceans gets no light just heat from the core. Finally (food for thought)what about other infinite dimensions

Lbm
Well back to the thread then...I saw one (UFO) hovering just above horizon and below the sun in the early evening in 1979. I don't believe it was an alien craft (I hoped it was, at the time) but we reported it to the MOD. They replied with a letter saying they didn't know what it was. A fairly unspectacular ending then
