Brake disk removal

There's no need to hit them at all, and smacking the hell out of them bruises the hub bearing races. There are two 8mm threaded holes in the wheel flange face of the discs, put in two good quality (high tensile) bolts and wind them in evenly. The thread multiplication acts as a very powerful push against the hubs and the discs just come off. be SURE to wind in the handbrake adjusters on the rear handbrake shoes, otherwise you'll pull the shoes off the locking pins and be chasing parts most Toyota dealers won't have, or be very good at finding on the CD. If people had hammers removed from their home tool kits I'd be a lot poorer, so smack the bejesus out of them if you prefer ;)

Removing, just want to take them off, give them a good clean & paint then refit.

Thanks Chris, is the removal method the same for the front & rear disks?

Yes, but the handbrake shoe adjusters need addressing on the rear ones. If you smack the discs with a hammer they may well shatter, or you'll bruise them and they'll judder like hell. I suppose "leave them alone" doesn't appeal...? :)

Yeah you need to adjust the shoe adjusters fully in before you try to take the disc off.

I've seen one where the owner had pulled the disc off using the two bolt holes, without winding them in and had bent the pin that holds the shoe hold down pin almost straight (they're supposed to have a kink in them)

The show hold down cup had, in it's new straightened "longer" guise hit the back of the wheel studs and become mashed. The remnants had then got stuck between the shoe and the drum and was causing a grinding noise that eventually alerted him to the trouble.

When you re-fit them fit them, wind the adjuster wound fully in, fit the disc and hold it in place using the wheel nuts. Then adjust the shoes out until you can't spin the disc by hand. Then wind the adjuster back in by 8 clicks. The handbrake will then work perfectly. ;)
