Second Turbo

Recommended Posts

When the first turbo on my J spec TT spools up you feel it coming in but the second one is not really noticible. Do you guys get a second real kick @4k ish?

My car only has 32k on the clock and now Im starting to wonder if the second turbo is knackered. My car is a standard 98 vvti.

Any useful suggestions?

Darren,

The second turbo pre-spools at about 3500rpm to try and smooth the transition between turbo's, to try and elimiante a big kick.

I think the vvti will also affect this too.

Best thing to do would be to stick a boost guage on and see that the turbo's are doing.

With the stock exhaust and a VVTI I would think the surge on the second turbo would not feel like a kick. I did not feel a kick on a Stock non VVTI until I got the cats out, unfortunately I did have a boost gauge when I did the exhaust mod. Now I get a noticeable and exhilarating shove after 4000 rpm

I drove a VVTI form JIC for a day about a 18 months ago, as I recall it felt fairly urgent most of the time from 2500 upwards. But I spent most of the time playing with the tiptronic stuff. The stock boost gauge in those things is no good it is just on boost or off boost. In the car I drove it was up against max most of the time.

I've been paying a bit more attention to that stock boost gauge and it tallies quite well with my other boost gauge.

0 is in fact 0, and the highest gradient is 0.8bar, being the stock amount of boost that makes sense. The markings between 0 and the top one (0.8) are linear, so the halfway mark is 0.4bar.

I think you should see the needle go from about 3/4 to full at around 4000rpm is #2 turbo is working normally.

If it never hits full, there may be something wrong.

I wish my stock boost gauge worked like that. Mine goes off the top of the scale with just the first turbo online. Tried it last night, at 2000rpm in third, floor the accelerator and it zips straight up to maximum and stays there. You can't see any difference when #2 turbo comes in (you can feel it though...)

i dont - but then it depends on how you do it,

with the AUTO JSPEC TT (standard) which is mine,

and not a vvti,

"general" driving i dont get any kick at 4Kish,

yet, when i plonk the old foot down, i hear a massive

noise and a noticable lag/kick and the needle goes from

50 leptions to 110 leptons in no time at all....

i too though that my 2nd turbo wasnt working ok when

i first got it - but i was Mr.Gentle for about 6 months,

when you get used to it and more confident you then really

start to open it up and i noticed all the kicks etc after that...

a boost guage is a must - fitting mine next week!!!
