Supragal
I have no idea about these things, so is it possible to run a device that runs off the mains from a car battery? i.e. where there is no mains power available?
Timwildman
yes
Supragal
thanks... how easy is it...? And, errr, How?
Matt Harwood
You need a voltage inverter. They're generally rated in watts, so which one you need will depend on what you want to run. A 150 watt unit would cost you about £25-30 ish. One for a 2000 watt hairdryer would cost a LOT more
Timwildman
Why cant I edit my posts anymore? Places like halfrauds, and maplin sell them fairly cheaply. Some of the lower power versions can plug into the lighter socket. I've got one just to charge batteries, and run a camcorder or small things like that. Think it was £30ish
Supragal
It's to run a set of horse clippers.... but by the time I've bought it all and got cable long enough I reckon it'll work out the same to buy some battery ones. They don't last very long though
bens747
Probs a bit costly but how about a portable generator. Would be able to run all manor of things like a jet washer if ur thread implys it would be at a stables or for any power that u needed ......Ben
Supragal
A pressure washer would have been useful the other week up there thats for sure!! Was tempted but I've never heard one that isn't louder than Hell, plus money is a real issue
bens747
Be surprised Rosie. They are very quiet now If ur worried about the horse then just use an extension cable.
bens747
Maybe have a look here Rosie http://search.ebay.co.uk/Generators Ben ..........
Sharpie
Rosie, I just got a portable power unit to jump start the soop as my battery was drained. (You don't have to use the jump leads you can recharge the soop battery from the units battery via the cigarette lighter socket to save those aftermarket electrical items from blowing) It also has a 250psi compressor (With Guage) to pump up your tyres, has a 300watt 12-240v power inverter so, it has a normal 3pin plug on the side so, I can run household items out in the field. It has a twin bulb fluorescent light on the side too. I got it from Halfrauds for £69 and will do me for places like POD, where I can now lower my tyre pressures and then pump them up afterwards along with jump starting my car if I forget to turn the radio off while stuck in the queue. They are not shown on Halfrauds web site.....but, here is what it's lower spec brother looks like (The units are the same size) http://www.shop.edirectory.co.uk/autosave/pages/moreinfoa.asp?pe=BGEGJEEQ_+Ring+Powerpack+120+Portable+Power&cid=225 I got a new HCB005 battery for the soop too, just to be safe

Supragal
that is cheap....tempting... how fast will it drain a battery?
geoffvalenti
that is cheap....tempting... how fast will it drain a battery? A rough rule of thumb with 12v inverters, is to divide the power consumption, in Watts, of the equipment connected to the inverter by 10, to give the current required from the 12v supply in Amps. eg. 100w bulb/10 = approx 10 Amps current draw So a 300w inverter run at full load needs 30 amps, a fairly heavy current draw. Its never really a good idea to use the starter (vehicle) battery for any length of time (without running the engine) otherwise its easy to drain the battery enough for the starter to not be able to turn the engine over. Supragal
Yeah I was gonna run it at the same time. But that would be more than an hour. Much easier to fork out £300 for some battery ones!!!
