michael
Does anyone here have any experience of the 106 diesel? (1.5 I believe) I have the opportunity to obtain a '99 "Zest" as a straight swap for my current Escort daily hack, the size of the car doesn't appeal but the diesel engine and associated MPG does. I presume it's a fairly basic and unexciting ownership experience but they are supposed to handle quite well aren't they?
RobSheffield
Rich has one Michael. I believe his comment was 'it may look crap but runs well and uses very little fuel' 99 model year should be comfy enough.
michael
I've read that the pedal area is a bit tight for space but otherwise the generic reviews seem favourable, I'm just concerned it might not be a potent as the mighty 90PS Zetec monster I have now
RobSheffield
Im afraid the potency will be well down Pedal area on all the 106/saxo types seems to be tight and/or offset.
jamesmark
The other thing to consider is the steering wheel is not adjustable, it is permanently fixed.
michael
Mmm... I might just do the swap and sell it on straight away, I suspect there is a bit more money in it once polished than there is in the Escort.
Fifty
I have a 306 which is bigger - diesel too; err I forgot to say I hate it but it does 55 mpg. Rich
Matt H
We had one as a company car, worst thing i have ever driven. Press one pedal and you press them all. horrible horrible horrible. Id keep the escort over that.
Gordon F
We had one as a company car, worst thing i have ever driven. Press one pedal and you press them all. horrible horrible horrible. Id keep the escort over that. I had a 97 one which I bought myself with 24k miles on it. Sold it 6 years later with 139k on it. The car was great. Did 90 miles a day in it to work and back, always started, never let me down. Averaged 60 - 70 mpg all the time I had it. Pedal area and the lack of power steering were a couple of issues, but who cares when it costs you naff all to run?
Chris Wilson
Veg oil is an option, a friend runs his on it and saves a good deal of money.
Gord R
Just sold one i bought to put me on between cars. They are by no means fast , but they do what they say on the tin cheap to run and reliable. As mentioned you will easily see 60-70mpg. Get them up into 5th and keep it flowing is the best bet. And yes they are typical lightweight french car and handle well. Only main thing that pissed me off was the pedal size/ spacing i have quite wide feet and the pedals annoyed me, catch the brake whilst goingfor the clutch etc. If its cheap then id recommend them. Ive got size 9's and never struggled with the pedal box. Mine never had powersteering and it did need it TBO. I'd recomend them to anyone.
