Which direction should a hospital bed point?

It's the Daily Mail again so more than likely it's made up to create outrage but I can't resist...

Genuine question - are hospitals in Muslim countries designed with this in mind and do their beds all face in the right direction? Or are they just interested in making people well again?

What a bunch of soft leftie tossers we are becoming in this country:(

With a close relative having just spent 2 weeks in intensive care and still in Hospital I have seen first hand how busy they are and how underfunded, if this lot don't like the free care and support as it is then turf the buggers out on the street and let someone who appreciates it use the bed.

Let the bloody relatives get off their arses and do it if it's so important!!

Like the comments below too, no these people aren't racist and it seems more people like myself have had enough of this crap.

The problem as I see it, is that people are going to get annoyed with these little things. Enough little things will add up and eventually people may end up voting BNP not because they believe in the complete ideology, but they are getting fed with all the compromises that happen. And that will end up with riots and all sorts in the streets because we have compromised on so many little things.

Such as Christmas being called the festival period, last time I checked Britian was christian country, now I'm not religious, if anything I'm Buddhist in my beliefs, but I can't understand what the problem is with calling it Christmas, nobody is asking them to rename their religious festivals.

.

Other news sources included this:

The training sessions were introduced after Catherine Briggs, matron at the hospital, spoke to Muslim patients about how staff could improve their service.

Mrs Briggs said: "We are committed to providing the highest possible standards of care to every one of our patients and we know that Dewsbury and District Hospital treats a high number of patients from the Muslim community.

"We always do our best to listen to our patients and are willing to adapt our nursing practices where possible to help patients uphold their cultural beliefs."

The matron added: "Some of our former Muslim patients suggested that a more informed understanding of the Islamic cultures would help staff to further improve their service.

"In response to these comments I have been working with Moulana Ilyas Dalal, our senior Muslim chaplain at the hospital, to develop a training package that will better inform staff of the different cultural and religious needs of patients."

Beverley Brook, who works on Ward Six at the hospital, was one of the first members of staff to enrol on the training course.

She said: "Although I already knew quite a lot about the Islamic faith, this gave me a greater understanding on how we can make small changes on a daily basis that will really make a difference to our Muslim patients."

(Yorkshire Post and BBC)

So the impetus came from the NHS asking 'how can we give you a better service?' not, as you seem to be suggesting, from the muslim community complaining.

Note that this came from the matron at the hospital, who presumably is well-placed to know what is and isn't feasible.

The headline makes it sound as if it's an imperative that's being given to staff:

Hospital staff told to make sure Muslim patients' beds face Mecca five times a day

but then, when you read on, you find that the request is actually much more reasonable [emphasis added by me]:

Yesterday, a spokeswoman for Mid Yorkshire NHS Trust confirmed that nurses were encouraged to help meet individual requests.

She said: "Nurses have not been ordered to move beds or provide running water - they have just been encouraged to help meet patients' needs wherever possible.

"If a sick patient requests that their bed be moved to face Mecca, then it is right that the hospital looks at this request - even if it is more than once a day.

"If it is practically possible - and is not inappropriate or inconvenient to nurses or other patients - then it is right that nurses try and carry it out.

Worth bearing in mind that The Daily Mail is known far and wide as the absolute arsehole of British journalism. Of all the tabloids, they have the most blatant agenda. Half of what they print is just untrue, and the other half is coloured at every syllable with their reactionary twaddle.

Yeah, but do you not agree that everyone has to go over the top now on all issues like this for fear of being labelled racist?

I'm sure that Muslims have complained about it and that has pushed them into this, let's face it they aren't worried about being treated 'special' and getting every little thing they can out of this country.

:rolleyes:hmm interesting. Swivel bed should be invented, so you can just hit the "mecca" button. and it aligns, saves money on staff time.

I think its only for muslim patients that are bed ridden, can understand that. it's kinda sweet actually.

and on hospital food.

first there was a vegetarian option for meals right, then halal,..... i think its reasonable. so long as it's don't cost too much.

lets not forget the muslim peers helping to get that liverpool lady from being whipped or held longer in sudan.

It's ludricrious. Can't be just about a teddy bear can it. She did right by the chidren, shame some grown ups didn't agree and it turned into some kind of grudge bearing cultural and political football.

They should have left the stupid old bint to fester for a few months, quite what the hell the old trout was thinking of going out there for "some excitement" as she said on TV this AM, I don't know. She sure as hell got some! She should have her arse kicked by her husband and be chained to the sink where she belongs, not let loose to pratt about in some hell hole "for a bit of excitement". I also blame the Sudanese for allowing her entry with hair like that ;)

To balance something that right-wing, you'd need Socialist Worker or Pravda ;)

I get a bit worked up over the Mail. No, really.

Stupid bunch of religious fools. I'm sure there are countries better suited to this kind of bollocks. Might I suggest they move there instead of coming here and expecting everyone to bend over backwards for them.

I hate religions. All of them. Islam though gets it's own special place at the top of the list.

1) Once again, there's absolutely no suggestion in the story that they are expecting anything. The muslim community were asked by the matron of the hospital, 'what can we do to improve our service?' If somebody offers to try to accommodate your beliefs, what is the logical response to that?

2) But a lot of them haven't come over here, have they? Many muslims are second or third generation - they were born here.

I'm not going to let facts get in my way. Sheesh!
