tbourner
Are they healthy? They're supposed to be, but why is there so much fat on the label? 100g of Pistachio nuts has 46g of fat in!!!! Is this some weird natural fat that isn't fattening or are they only good 'in moderation'? I could eat bags of nuts and seeds, should I?
Lukeyboy2k
As you've already stated it's the good old "in moderation". All nuts have comparatively high fat levels compared to many foods. However, this fat is the "good fat". The body requires a certain level of fat to help absorb/utilise other ingredients. Pistachios are a good choice in that it is difficult to eat a large amount quickly because you have to take the sometimes fiddly shells off. At the other end of the scale are the various types of peanut (roasted, salted, that sweet stuff) - the coatings are not as healthy (and you can eat shed loads in a short space of time). Snooze
Nuts and fruit are "good for you" in the same way that olive oil is "good for you". You should eat nuts and fruit instead of chocolate in the same way that you should use olive oil instead of lard. ie. just use a little bit now and again. Eating a whole bag of nuts is the health equivalent of chugging half a litre of olive oil: it's a healthy food, but you're only supposed to have a little of it! I tend to have to stay away from nuts. I love 'em, but I can't stop eating 'em!
