Leeky
Hi peeps, im off to santapod in January and the gaunlet has been thrown down to me by a very cheeky accord type r owner Now im sure my uk spec 326bhp Supra shouldnt have much problem destroying a 209bhp family 4 banger - but i want to destroy him royally :flame Dev I've taken the Supra to the pod before so understand how important getting off the line is for these cars (once they are moving and at full boost its pretty easy going) thus i want to improve the reponsiveness. Decatting and a performance zorst with a boost controller/fcd seem the best way to start but im limited on funds at the moment. So im thinking just a double decat and a manual boost valve. Is this the best way to start? How much power am i loosing by keeping the standard zorst? Can i run as much as 1.2bar on the standard zorst if i add in an fcd? Thanks in advance
Nic
If you are on a budget then decat, FCD and boost gauge would be the first things to go for. This should make the turbos a lot more responsive and you will be able to see what you are boosting to. With stock exhaust/IC you should probably keep it to around 1-1.1bar. Paul -C-
I had a double decat pipe but kept the standard catback exhaust. To be honest there wasn't much difference at all. Once I changed the catback I noticed a big difference, and so did my boost gauge If I were you i'd go for the catback first instead of the decat. carl0s
i've just had a 3" full decat done on my otherwise stock UK spec and I've noticed the turbos seem very free (spool smoothly) and there's more power when number2 kicks in. It's not mind blowingly different but it's a lot better. Actually thinking about it I haven't noticed it roaring quite as much lately. Maybe it's the bad weather so I haven't been flooring it the same.
Sharpie
From stock to double decat and zorst on my UK, I moved from 0.8 bar to 0.95 bar, it felt much quicker at 0.95 bar

I think he's really looking to find out what difference he'll see from just a double decat. No exhaust change.
Sharpie
Yes, exhaust as well. I don't think you can really upgrade your car just for one event when on a tight budget as what you CAN afford might not fit in with your long term plans......Unless you are happy with this kind of set up ? Leeky is talking about is keeping a restriction in the exhaust so, EGT's will rise if he keeps the stock parts and ups the boost to 1.2 bar - If he uses a bleed valve then, he needs a boost gauge otherwise he will not know what boost he is running. If his EGT's are rising then, he needs an EGT gauge to keep an eye on these too = £££ I'm sure you could get a custom exhaust (No name) made up cheaper, pull only one cat and fit a mechanical boost gauge and bleed valve to up the boost to 1.2 bar which, will keep all the costs down. It will give you everything you need for the one event but, thinking long term....is this the setup you want ? You might want an electronic boost gauge with peak hold and replay features/backlit more £££, you might want a specific exhaust note when driving ? You might want an electronic boost controller to use the preset boost settings (selectable in car) AND it might have a boost gauge in the controller too. Choices choices HTH
Leeky
Thanks guys, all good input I already have a Blitz boost guage, but have yet to get a turbo timer so have had the pleasure of having to sit in the car and wait for the turbos to cool down So that is next on the last as i see on ebay i can get one for about £30 Im going to Evolution in the new year and im going to get them to design me a custom exhaust pipe of at least 3" all the way through and im gonna get them to incorporate a sports cat to replace the two stock ones. This is only because i know someone who got pulled on a roadside test and he got a hefty fine for not having any cats But i need further advice on boost controllers and fcd's. What is out there and what do you people use? Cheers
Sharpie
On the Turbo Timer (TT), yes it nice for the car to think for itself and tell YOU how long to sit in the car but, if you still have the UK stock alarm then, you will STILL have to sit and wait for it to finish as the alarm and TT do not mix - at least it takes out the guess work out of it of how long to wait (I find that I do not have to wait half as long, if at all, where when I did not have the TT I used 2mins for every trip - This is not always needed as in town you are off boost anyway) FCD - I have the TRL VFCC (btw Pete at TRL has now grown into Thor) cost me ~£90 a couple of years ago - fitted in 2002 never looked at it since and does what it says on the tin http://www.mkivsupra.net/vbb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=9916 Others you can choose from are the HKS FCD and some reports tell you to stay away from the Greddy BCC......make your own mind up. Electronic Boost controllers (EBC) - I think the general consensus is that the Blitz units with the twin solenoid are best at keeping a steady/stable boost. They start off with the DSBC and then onto the SBC-ID III. http://www.blitz-uk.co.uk/2003/electronics.html Others use the Apex-i AVC-R http://www.apexi-usa.com/electronics_savcr.asp and one or two use the HKS units but, not many. Manual Boost controllers (MBC) or Bleed valve - I have used one from Chris Wilson which, worked fine and I was very happy to up the boost to 1.2 bar this way and my first steps into boost controllers on the cheap. You do have a more steady/constant boost pressure with the EBC but, a bleed valve does the job with no frills. Anyway, I should get back to work now and all IMO HTH
