Nic
Over in UK for Christmas at my parents and want to organise broadband connection for them. Any recommendations of which provider to go for?
Alex
PlusNet (aka Force9) Look on http://www.adslguide.org

Jake
Anything but AOL. Pipex seem ok
dangerous brain
I'm on pipex but they are offering the 2mb line at 39.99 now which is double the plusnet one. surely that cant be right as pipex usually shadow plusnets prices.
dangerous brain
OK wont let me edit the post. The reason its only £19.99 with plusnet is its got a 1gb cap on it which with a 2mb line kind of negates the entire point of having a 2mb line. GeordieSteve
BLUEYONDER!!!!! They just upgraded me to 4Mb
dangerous brain
BLUEYONDER!!!!! They just upgraded me to 4Mb What the hell do ya do with a 4mb connection?
GeordieSteve
Wank profusely! lol
dangerous brain
I can do that very much without a 4mb net connection. I find that I am pretty much wasting my 1mb connection but now it will cost me money to convert it back down to 512k
GeordieSteve
To be honest you will never really use any more than 1Mb. Due to the fact most web pages are under 20kb then you should be ok with about
merckx
What the hell do ya do with a 4mb connection? Useful for downloading large files quicker. Are you paying the £50 / month charge for the 4Mb service?
GeordieSteve
Only if the site hosting the large files have a HUUUUGE connection. Yep £50 a month but I was paying that for 2Mb.... and they've upgraded me twice over the past few month.... which was nice
paulfurn
Im with Blueyonder mate. Had about 5 periods of downtime in 4 years which I think is excellent. I did work for them though I was only entitled to the same as every other residential customer as I paid full whack for mine (wasnt a perk of the job). Also the lack of downtime wasmt due to me working there - there were no favours done! On a 4Mbit pipe now and its very nice indeed, but if only your parents are doing it then go for the 750kbit/1Mbit option. NTL also do a similar package. GeordieSteve
One complaint with Blueyonder... I've recently had to use another DNS. No biggie but Blueyonder's DNS stopped me from using ebay, autotrader etc.
RobSheffield
Dangerous Brain, is the 1 GB cap per day or week or month or what?!
Gamer
Nildram (http://www.nildram.co.uk) is the best UK provider overall.
Liam
the best ADSL ISP is Zen Internet but its expensive http://www.zeninternet.co.uk i use Eclipse which has been excellent, you can flex your internet connection when you need to, so if you have a video (ahem) downloading and it's going to take a while simply FLEX to 2MB for an hour or more if you want http://www.eclipse.net.uk i would give plusnet a miss, they've been doing dodgy stuff to there customers connections heres a list to compare all the isp's mentioned in this thread from adslguide.org http://www.adslguide.org.uk/isps/compare.asp?blueyonder=ON&eclipse=ON&pipex=ON&plusnet=ON&zen=ON&cmp_action=Compare
Homer
Nildram (http://www.nildram.co.uk) is the best UK provider overall. Yup, Nildram is about as good as it gets have heard nothing but good experiences with them from commercial and home connections. I'm on 1.5mb NTL which is okay... fast and very reliable (compared to friends on eclipse - BT- etc ADSL). God help anyone who has problems with NTL broadband - since they moved their tech support to India you haven't a hope in hell of talking to anyone who has any real technical knowledge, they are totally inept and have no experience or support tools... toyotasuprauk
I'm with Pipex no problems ever, although when I needed there help from technical support once it wasn't very good.
dangerous brain
Dangerous Brain, is the 1 GB cap per day or week or month or what?! I beleive its the old monthly cap. To be honest you will end up on the "premium service" with a 2mb line as there is little point in having that line if you can max its capacity out in about an hour of useage. Its still not a shy price at 40 sheckles for a 2mb line if you use broadband to that degree. Pipex's support I have to say is toilet. OK for peeps that know their crap not so clever if summat goes wrong and you are a techno-biff
Marco
Time to bring this thread back! I'm also changing broadband provider. BT is putting a limit on the downloads now, 15 gig/months. What are the newsgroups like on Plusnet? Any good? BT is deleting everything bigger than 1mb from theirs, so it's rubbish for mp3's and movies etc... What's the average speed you get with Plusnet? Supragal
Not sure about eclipses download limits etc but they're pretty good
