dangerous brain
WSO - back seat driver Not in the helicopter world its not. They sit side by side and often do alot of the flying. Once you are a nav you can transfer across to pilot without age restrictions in the helicopter world.

Sheefa
Yep, I've heard of quite a few people transferring over so it is an option although my eye sight isn't perfect so restricted by what I can do there too. WSO is a great role. At least I would get some flying hours under my belt and I don't mind sitting in the back seat of a GR4 doing in excess of 800knots at 100ft above the ground.........personally. TLicense
When I was a pup I applied for aircrew. My local recruitment office is Oxford, so I went to see what the deal was. They told me I could only apply twice. So I applied and then waited for a year(!) for them to get back to me. I kept calling every few weeks to see what was going on, but they kept telling me it was being processed. Eventually I was told that they had no record of my application, and I should apply again. Apparently the idiot who was the office gimp at the office had forgotten to do anything with my application. So applied again, got through to OASC. Did that and was offered air load master. I only wanted pilot / nav, but by now was 22. So I figured I'd get as much life experience as I could and apply just in time before being too old. When I re-applied, I got a bollocking off the office C/O, as I'd never been back for a de-briefing from OASC, which I was told to do in the letter I never received. They also said that I showed lack of commitment as I'd only applied once before. I said that I didn't want to waste my 2nd go, and was then told I could apply as many times as I liked. Well as you could imagine, that interview went like shite, and I never got asked to go to OASC, and that was the end of my dream to join the RAF that I'd had since I was 10. To say I'm a little bit bitter and twisted about it is an understatement. Useless fecks.
Sheefa
I know Tony. The process is a little 'complex' and I've been applying for 8 months now too! Despite completing OASC, guess when they said I can expect to hear the results??! Anywhere between 3 weeks and 9 months - thanks, that's great for career planning! All worth it in the end though I'm sure. Especially after watching programmes earlier like the Army in Basra Palace when you think what the feck am I doing here in a civvy job when I SHOULD be out there. Sheefa
Thanks Andy. Really appreciate that mate. Looking forward to getting in (touches wood) and starting my hardcore IOT and JROC training! Should be out and about in Basra or Southern Afghan in no time! Without any shadow of any doubt you will end up "in the shit" somewhere no matter when you join. Since the early 1800's British forces have been heavily engaged across the world. Only the stay at home die hards manage to not get in the crap these days. There is almost nowhere left to hide any more since the government saw fit to civilianise pretty much every 9-5 role in the forces. To Tony I think you were a good fish that got away. And seeing where you ended up that was their loss. The RAF selection is only as good as the people in the particular office you go to. That office may be manned by some f*ckwit pan basher or aircrew depending on which one you walk into and when. Lets put it this way my mates last boss was a pencil pusher that made complete out of touch buffoons look like genius's. Its criminal actually that most CIO personnel are actually war dodging gimps that hate the forces and want a civilian job and the CIO is as close as you can get.
