Water leak

Further to my post in supra chat id thought id post something more specific here. Got home the other night, got out the car and all of a sudden I was covered in clouds of steam from the engine bay along with a massive hissing. We couldnt tell what it was in the dark but the iniotial thoughts were that it was the water pump, core plug or therastat. Last night we had it on the ramp. The engine bay was still very wet and we couldn't see where the leak was. We had the engine running for a bit and then turned it off but still no sign. The blowers were blowing the correct tempreature, maybe a little warm, the footwells were dry and the temp gauge also normal. The only thing was that there was no pressure in the hoses. Does anyone have any thoughts? Cheers:)

it could be that the spring on the rad cap has gotten weak, therefore not allowing the water system to reach correct pressure, this will then allow it to boil over, just a possibility.

Mine overheated on the A13 in the summer, the Toyota gauge never moved until the last second then it shot of the scale, the Defi gave me the first clue when the Alarm went off, it made a lot of steam (this would be worse in the cold of winter), most of the steam was from the overflow expansion tank, and it was the thermostat in the end that had caused it

Well they've spent all morning going over the car and cant find a thing wrong with it. No leaks or anything to cause the burst of steam and hissing. He's driving it back to his now so I will see him later to find out how it was driving. If its fine then maybe I may of been low on water (though im sure I wasn't) and if it does the same again I have no idea what the problem is.

just a thought but i had something simalar a while back, aparently if the last time you filled it up caused an air lock it could have been that finaly getting out through the expansion tank and causing the problem, just be carefull as the stock gauge is shite, on a track day my hks gauge showed over 120, yet the stock had not moved:(

Thanks for that gaz. The gauge is shite. Even when it went the gauge showed normal! Its just been driven at normal speeds and im told it seemed fine and wasn't losing water etc. I'll take it for a blast myself tonight to see how it is. Fingers crossed all should be well.

i would deffo reccomend anyone to get a water gauge as a priority, mine has come close to the mark after a certain trader forgot to refill:( then next time forgot to tighten the clamps:rolleyes: if i had not had a gauge i reckon i would have lost her:(

Right then, this is really starting to bug me. The supe was driven home yesterday and was told it seemed fine. So I drove it myself gently for about 5 miles and all was well. Then I took on a 10 - 15 mile blast reaching about 90 leptons. Appeared fine but when I got home and I got out there was a strong smell of anti freeze again and the engine was pretty hot. I popped the bonnet and as I lifted it there was more steam (though only a relitively small cloud which very quickly dispersed). The smell and steam again appeared to be coming from the drivers side, not far above the 1st cat.

Im convinced its a problem with the water pump or a hose behined it. It will be pressure tested tonight and hopefully that will find the problem. On tick over and the engined off there is no leak so the build up of pressure with some spiritted driving is causing the problem.

Found it. The thermostat is knackered.

If I'd seen the thread sooner I'd have said that too ;)

My Corsa had similar problems - steam everywhere every now and again. Thermostat was knackered but I had to take it back to the garage 3 times to convince them it was and get them to change it!

The leak is back. Clouds of steam last night that seemed to be coming from one of the heater pipes. We will look tonight to see which one and if it is definately coming from one of them. But when i filled it up with water today there was loads of dripping comi9ng from around/above the thermostat housing. Any further thoughts from anyone?

Could it not be something as simple as a split pipe somewhere?? I would imagine that under low pressure the leak will not be excessive but when hot it will piss out!

We're hoping so. It did appear to come from the thermostat housing and when we had a look it was a buggered seal. Everything seamed ok for a couple of days but the leak appears to be above the housing sometimes and a differant place at others. So tonight there will be manifolds off, the lot, to work out exactly where it is coming from! The side off the block was wet and the water seamed to be from the head, but hopefully that is just from the water spraying.
