Mohammed can't "bear" it.

Not sure if anyone read my previous post as nobody has commented on it yet, but I still think it is pertinent to the discussion:

"Much as we may personally disapprove of the laws, customs and traditions of other countries, it's nevertheless our obligation to respect them while we are there. If you call a toy bear by the name of Mohammed in Sudan, drink beer in Saudi, or have your chest shaved by a barber in Omaha - you're breaking the law."

We might think of those laws as ludicrous, but the people who made them don't. By the same token, I am sure we too have daft laws that people of foreign countries think are stupid too.

At the end of the day it's not a serious matter. Only when a country advocates something serious like terrorism or genocide, THEN can a foreign power step in in the name of humanitarianism. Being arrested over calling a teddy by the name of Mohammed is hardly a case for calling in the SAS is it? Subtle diplomacy behind the scenes will do the trick.

I didn't comment but as you can see from my posts too, I agree.

You're right about the ways in which we should go about the outcome, but as I've also said...it's an obscure law (Not calling a teddy Mohammed)

A Middle Eastern journalist on radio 5 today said millions of Middle Eastern children call their pets and teddys many names...including Mohammed... :rulez:??

No SAS needed though at this stage ;)

Seconded...

Although on the other flip of the coin the following are still current - although I am not sure that if we caught a immigrant Muslim breaking any of them they would receive 40 lashes?

1) A Welshman can still be shot by a crossbow if found within the City of Chester's walls after midnight.

2) You can still urinate on the rear nearside tyre of a Hackney Carriage while keeping your right hand on the roof.

3) Hackney Carriages must carry a bale of hay.

4) There are 2 offences for which someone can still be hanged in Britain:-

a) High Treason

b) Piracy on the high seas.

There used to be a third, Fire in Her Majesties Dockyard.

5) You can still have your hand chopped off if you steal a pig from market

Do we therefore look at the reaction to laws broken as the benchmark for civilised society?
