Would I be better off with a USB wifi thing? I only have USB1.1 though but at least I know the USB works properly. I'm guessing I could also have a CardBus problem!

Highly unlikely that you have a cardbus problem, but quite probable that your choice of wireless cards is severely limited if you are looking at pc card stuff because there is no market for pc card wifi any more.

The Netgear wg111T USB sticks seem to work well enough. They're RaLink based if I remember right, so drivers can be had directly from ralinktech.com.tw

It's starting to sound that way. The aerials are screwed-in on the router properly aren't they?

Absolutely! It only has the one aerial though.

I think I might get a USB version of the card as I know the USB port works. If it still doesn't give a solid connection then I'll have to try a new router.

I can't help thinking you are trying to fix the wrong thing here, it seems more like it's the router at fault to me.

You haven't got DHCP configured to lease the IP out for 10 minutes or something daft have you?

Encryption on or off? Can you pick up any wifi from the neighbours?

I was gonna say, encryption used to cause all sorts of problems. You might find it works reliably with WEP or completely open, but that's not a nice solution really.

Early wireless interopability seemed to be a nightmare when WEP was entered into the equation, but nowadays it's rarely an issue and WPA usually just works.

It's set to WPA but I also had problems with it completely open. The only other network I can 'see' is a LIVEBOX one that shows up as 18% (and secure) compared to the 100% of my Netgear one. Well, that was on the one and only time it was detected!

How do I check the DHCP thing? I saw something this morning and can't find it now.

Annoyingly, it connected first time this morning without the main PC being on. I'm wondering if it is getting interfernce from the monitor.

My partner wants her PC to be non-wifi so we are limited in how far we can get the router from it. IIRC ethernet cables and the phone line should/need to be as short as posibble.

I think I might have cracked it. I have changed the channel setting to 7 and the damned thing connected right away.

So confident was I that I'd cracked it I unplugged the power supply and headed away from the main pc.

No connection.

Then I saw that the router had no lights on! Oops. I'd knocked the router plug. Popped it back in and my laptop found the connection again at 100% strength.

Touch wood it'll stay active and I won't post another FAIL update.

It still works. I lay in bed last night doing some 'research' and browsed the forum this morning in the kitchen while the kettle was boiling. Great stuff.

I'd also like to thank everyone who offered an idea, help or whatever. Much appreciated.
