TLicense
I don't really keep up with what's the latest and greatest computer hardware out there at the moment. If you were going to build a system for sensible money, but suitable to play graphic intensive games for next couple of years, what would be the best products to buy..... Pete
Short answer? The best you can afford! Let's start with a budget as there's no use recommending a £300 graphics card if you only want to spend £500 on a complete system.
Wez
If you can get an Nvidia 8800GT card, they sell for £130 - £200 and everyone is raving about them. As for CPUs I always stick with Intel, get one with a decent FSB.
TLicense
This is totally hypothetical to be honest, but I'm just interested to see what's out there at the moment. What if you had three machines. One costing £500, one costing £1K and one as much as you want. Where would you spend your money on each.... Wez
If you want to play games get a decent graphics card. When I was messing around with mine the other week increasing the CPU, FSB and memory speeds had little or no affect on game frame rates. Only when I turned the graphics card GPU and memory up did I notice any difference. Any Intel Core 2 Duo will do, match that with memory speed minimum 800 and a motherboard to match and you should be good to go.
Daston
You can build a semi decent DX10 PC for £
TLicense
But how..... it's all very well saying you can build a decent pc for £500, but what break down of parts?
Wez
All you need is :- Case with PSU SATA HDD CPU (comes with cooler) Motherboard Memory DVD Burner EDIT: and a graphics card if you wanna play games, some motherboard have video built in if you are not fussed about games. TLicense
lol, got that Wez What I mean is, for example currently I have a socket 939 motherboard. If I were to upgrade to an AM2 (I'm an AMD person!) which combination of motherboard, processor, memory and graphics card for the above budgets would give me the best performance. Wez
AMD I am a little biased as I worked for Intel, plus every AMD machine I have owned was unstable at published speeds without ever attempting overclocking. For combos/bundles check out http://www.overclockers.co.uk and then look at buying else where, they are not the cheapest around
Daston
AMD is rock solid great for overclocking and benchmarking plus always used to out perform Intel chips with higher clock speeds. However since AMD bought out ATI and Intel have gone to Quad Core it looks like Intel can now wave the fag. I used to love AMD but I will now buy who ever builds the better product. Hence why I have a Intel Core Duo Extream sat infront of me

Daston
only the 8mb one ordered it before I knew the 12mb was out! Although it was only $
colsoop
I have priced up my upgrades and it comes to around £600 (using original case, hard drives, disc drives etc) core 2 6850 cpu 650 watt psu 8500 ddr 2 memory evga 680 sli motherboard. 8800 gt graphics card. That should be fine for the latest crop of games and more in to the future. if it starts to struggle i can add a second 8800 gt in sli config to give it a boost. Marty
ooo where from? I'm building mine at the mo and was looking at the extreme... just cant justify the £500 price tag! Im using an extreme chip, duo x6800. Its running at 3.5Ghz at mo at a measly 21'c on my aircooled setup, but jumps up to 31'c at 3.7Ghz Recon i can break the 4 barrier easily Excellent chip, i got mine for not much over 200notes but was lucky. With that, and the rest of my setup, 8800 ultra etc, its cost me about 1grand.
