JamesS
Hi all Help I'm worried:confused: Going down to Bradford tomorrow to collect my first Supra problem is the guy selling it has no idea if or when its had a cambelt change, its an early 97 twin turbo just imported with 57k miles and I'm worried if its never been done in its ten+ years that it could snap on the way up the road, I've got roughly 400miles to do before I can get it replaced! Does anyone have any idea if Japanese owners are known for good maintenance and likely to have changed it or if Supras are known for cambelt issues? Cheers in advance... Ady
im changing mine now and im on 49k miles. i dont think there is a set mialge when they go, just depends on the condition of it! might be worth removing the spark plug cover and having a visual at it. On a plus - ive learnt that they are non inteferance (unless your getting the VVTI model) and that if they do go then they dont cause catastrophical damage. Id think about getting it changed soon thow
AndyT
60k miles is quoted. So you'll be ok to get home. Get it changed asap then.
JamesS
Cheers knew it was meant to be changed every 60k but also every 5 years whichever is sooner so in theory it could have missed 2 changes.
Nic
The 2JZGTE engine is non-interference (valves will not hit pistons), so if it did break it would not be a catastrophic engine failure.
Jake
On a plus - ive learnt that they are non inteferance (unless your getting the VVTI model) The j-spec VVTi is also non-interference. Only the USA spec non-turbo NA VVTi has the valve-smashing design
jaymdee
The j-spec VVTi is also non-interference. Only the USA spec non-turbo NA VVTi has the valve-smashing design Why did they decide to go for that then? Was it too expensive to design it as non-interference? redsupraman82
What about on a normal j spec N/A, wondering this myself, just had mine changed but if it did snap, would it be the end??
Homer
What about on a normal j spec N/A, wondering this myself, just had mine changed but if it did snap, would it be the end?? Nope, it's non-interference
bignum
The n/a vvti has a higher compression ratio, iirc
JohnA
Another point worth making is that the mileages of cars we haven't had from new may sometimes need to be taken with a pinch of salt. Juuuuuuust a grain. Especially imports with no history covering the first owners. 13 year old car with So the cambelt change may be more urgent even. JamesS
Cheers for the info all. Collected the car yesterday and drove it the 220miles up from Bradford not the best conditions for my first trip in it although I still enjoyed it even taking it easy. Had to brave the cold today and give a good wash, the roads were really dirty and salty yesterday! Aiming to get the cambelt changed this week! Also phoned Toyota who to see if they have service history confirmation on the car(which they say they don't keep for any their vehicles) but they said they offer a FREE 45 minute overall check on imported Toyota's by their engineers to make sure everything is in order. Thought this was really good and helpful so I'm booked in on Saturday.
