Thorin
The Special One would be a lot better choice than McClaren.

michael
Would he be able to go on the pitch and play football? Fair enough the manager might not pick the right people or fail on tactics but at the end of the day it's a simple enough game. I don't follow football, I don't know much about football but I got into the match last night because I thought England were going to get a kicking - what I saw, and this might be normal, was a group of blokes that seemed unable to kick a ball to each other, the idea seemed to be to kick it and hope that the right person got it... at which point they then gave it to a blue person. Surely the players know what to do when it's not going right? Surely as a collective group of highly paid individuals they can make their own changes and play properly? Do they get burnt in hell if they decide to do their own thing after agreeing it with a few of the other chaps?

The Special One could shake things up enough with the 'establishment' to maybe change the way the team's organised. I'm not sorry they're out though. Ady
im being serious - the english FA dont like him, but he is one of my highley rated manager ever. hes ruthles, tells the press like it is and most of all - dosent take crap of players, fans or press
Alex
I laughed at one opinion on BBC's website - apparrently McLaren got the job cause he made a nice powerpoint presentation and was happy to duff his cap/bow down to the FA...thus beating O'Neill to the job because O'Neill thought he was being interviewed for a Football Managers job....how silly. Until the FA stops being run by idiots we can't expect anything to change.

Michael for someone who does'nt watch football your assessment was v accurate. I like redknapp lots better than McDonut but didnt he get west ham relegated with great young squad? Pot
Looks like McLaren's gone : http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/7100393.stm
hoff
Jose would be ideal but you know the FA will be looking for home grown. Curbishly or O'neal would be the only 2 I can think of. Big Sam has proven he is shite and can only manage long ball teams, Moyes is Scottish (yes i know O'Neal is N. Irish, but has said in the past he'd like the job) and thats about all the talented managers from the home nation. Sparky wouldn't want it. Copple maybe. What about Tel and Shearer? CJ
The Special One would be a lot better choice than McClaren. I agree (mind you, almost any good manager would have been) but I cannot see the FA being brave enough to appoint someone like him. That backs up my thoughts above. The same thing happened in the 70's with Brian Clough. They were never going to appoint anyone who they could not control. My money would be on Martin O'Neil this time round
R Black
without a doubt he is a good manager but think if would struggle with primadonna's and the peak of international football, however he can motivate

danhicks22
What about Tel and Shearer? El Tel has also been sacked and Shearer has no experience. O'Neill is one of the best managers in the game, as is Redknapp although I think of the 2 only O'Neill would take the job. The problems go way further than the manager anyway - I don't think McClaren did that bad a job. He made a few mistakes but if you've got a team of players worth well over £100 million in club terms, I don't care what tactics you tell them to play, they have to do a job. They didn't, we deserve to be out on their performances. Not sure about Jose for the job. He'd get us achieving but we wouldn't play 'The English Way'. Not that we ever do at international level mind...
hoff
Really, I thought they might have stuck with him. He did a cracking job when he was manager. Shrearer I thought as a coach more then anything TBH.
