AJI
the carlos sainz model was only in the ST185 version.... the later version, the ST205 was a much better model. Better geometry, better brakes etc. etc. All the ST205s are a much of a muchness really. Some of the imports may be the WRC model.... all this means is that they come with a few extra 'bits' on them. The UK ST205's have a BHP figure quoted lower that the imports.... this is purely due to the fuel differences between here and japan. UK version quite often don't have the big rear spoiler whereas all the imports do. My advice would be to go for the newest car you can with these..... check for fig-8 suspension joint replacements... 60,000 miles sees most of them knackering up. I'm supplying quite a few of the figure of 8 joints and front arms for folks at the moment, it does seem to be a part that needs replacing. Yup, when they get worn enough it becomes very hard to keep the car in a straight line even if you could live with the clunking!
Ric
Nic how much are the figure 8's out of interest, i was looking at Gt4's before i got my supra, but was put off with the cost of the bushes (most people said like 500quid a side?) SBDJ
The bushes you are talking about are the superstrut suspension; generally it's one of the arms and the fig 8 that need replacing. Yes, they are very expensive! Great fun to change too Obviously this problem only affects the ST205; the ST185 & ST165 don't have the same suspension setup... SBDJ
No; only ST205s have superstrut suspension which includes the Camber Control Link (known as the Fig 8); earlier GT4's are regular MacPherson.
AJI
the fig8 joints basically do look like a number 8.... they are used to ensure the camber of the front wheels stays constant at all steering angles. But when they wear out they also wear out other parts of the suspension arms. So usually as already mentioned, not only do the fig-8's need changing, also numerous other suspension parts need changing aswell. Can be very expensive.
