Dazzi
I have both cats in and a nurspec catback exhaust. When I start moving off in 1st everything is fine but if I start rolling from a stand still in 2nd the car starts moving but I hear this very bad rattle coming from underneath the car (sounds like the middle) I thought this might be flywheel to start with but the rattle is still there if I push the clutch up and down while moving. I think I located this to the 2nd cat. Also recently the car is making a squeaking noise a bit like two pieces of metal grinding together very fast at a high pitch - I think this is coming from near the 1st cat. This only seems to happen once the car has warmed up and I go over very rough/bumpy roads. Is my exhaust on its way out (the cats)? They have never been replaced so im guessing the internals are breaking up and making these noises... just need a second opinion if its the above. bodilx6
I've got exactly the same thing. Just I don't have the 2nd cat installed at all. Does your rattle when you shut it off while NOT standing on the clutch? Mine has always rattled a bit (but way more when moving off in 2nd) just when the clutch start biting when moving off or clutching in at low speeds. It hasnt gotten worse in any way, so I have just written it off as being "one of the funky noises of the 6 sp" Got no idea what is actually the cause of it, but would be good to know. Think I heard something about some bushings on the US forum at some point.
Dazzi
No, mine just rattles when moving off in a high gear. Occasionally if I do a tight turn (while doing about 10mph ) it rattles then goes when going straight. I've given the exhaust a good shake but nothing. I might take the 2nd cat off and give it a persuader with a mallet to see if anything is loose inside. Strange that you say you don't have the 2nd cat in. Could it be the sound of the 1st cat rattling thats traveling down the pipe? or maybe its the clutch full stop. My MOT is due in april but I can't wait till then as its embarrassing going to the petrol station and having this rattle echo between the buildings when I leave. I still don't know what the squeaks are - exhaust brackets? I'll put up a vid tonight to show exactly what the noise(s) sound like.
bodilx6
I'm sure my rattle as nothing to do with any part of the cat/exhaust. There has been done quite a lot of work on these things but the rattle hasnt changed at any time. Also, my 1st cat has been off with the rattle still there. now it's on again but almost only a hollow shell, since it acts as my Restrictor Ring by having knocked a hole through it. I'm sure my rattle has something to do with the clutch, since the "moving-off-rattle" sounds like the "turn-engine-off-rattle" and that rattle isn't there if I stand on the clutch when the engine is turned off. My car was 100% standard on all things visible, but I'm wondering if the clutch could have been changed at some point or maybe even the flywheel, which I've heard can give a rattle when clutching if it is not the standard flywheel. How that rattle sounds, I've got no idea. But still I'm fairly sure that the sound is from something in the clutch/transmission. I'll give you a response to the vid if its the same, and if it is, I'm going to see if I can get any info from other forums
Glosphil
I have this, the bracket connecting the 1st Cat to the gearbox is broken, Im about to order a new one. Might be the same for yours.
Mike_Mac
The rattle sounds very very much like the second cat heat shield, which tends to work loose. Only certain actions seem to set it off though. Just brace it against the exhaust (with something that'll take the heat ) and see if it disappears (or fit a de-cat )
Dazzi
heat shield is already off as I thought it was that but it isn't. Can't do de-cat, too loud as im n/a. Heres the rattle(s): http://s139.photobucket.com/albums/q305/Ripon-Racer/?action=view¤t=Movie_0001.flv
bodilx6
Ah, thx for the video. Thats a completly different rattle than mine. Mine is more Clonck-clonck, like big metal rods being dropped a fex cm off a metal surface. Especially if I roll in 1st and declutch rapidly. CLONCK-CLonk-clonk.... CLONCK-CLonk-clonk.... this sounds like what i had. especially if it was in say second and pulling off. changing the engine to tt and the clutch so if the sound still persists then the only thing left is the gearbox and fly wheel. Dazzi
Right, finally sorted! - this was really getting up my tree The rattle when moving off underload was the heatshield on the 1st cat. The heatshield is 2 pieces of metal bolted together - 1 bolt was missing so was bound to rattle. The squeak was the bracket holding the exhaust to the gearbox - it snapped and was rubbing together. I haven't yet made a new bracket but anyway its gone. Thanks for the help people
